Nuts, storing

Maskan, M. and Karata, ., Fatty acid oxidation of pistachio nuts stored under various atmospheric conditions and different temperatures, J. Sci. Food Agric., 11, 334-340, 1998. [Pg.125]

Studies evaluated the oxidative stability of macadamia oil, obtained using different types of macadamia nuts [28]. The OSI of natural raw salted nuts stored for 4 months was 70 h, and the OSI of natural raw imsalted nuts was 88.6 h. The almond oil is better protected at low temperatures however, even under frozen storage, there is a reduction in the stability of the oil. The OSI of fried imsalted nuts was 40.3 h as a consequence... [Pg.297]

Most nuts for commercial use are characteri2ed by high oil and protein contents (see Proteins) as well as a low percentage of carbohydrates (qv). However, some varieties, mostly inedible tree nuts such as acorn, horse chestnut, and chufa, contain at least as much sugar and/or starch as protein. The edible water chestnut is also in this category, as is the cashew nut, which contains starch in addition to a rich store of oil. The proximate composition of a number of nuts and of some nut products are given in Table 2 (3). [Pg.269]

The primary use for methyl bromide is in the extermination of insect and rodent pests. Methyl bromide is used in space and stmctural fumigation except in California. The material is suitable for the fumigation of food commodities such as dried fmits, grain, flour, and nuts, and the faciHties in which these foods are processed or stored, as weU as for tobacco and many kinds of nursery stock. The usual dosage is 2—4 kg/28 m for 12—24 h. In soil fumigation methyl bromide controls weed seeds, nematodes, wireworms, and soil fungi. The usual dosage is 0.5—1 kg/9 m for 24 h at 16°C and above (82). [Pg.294]

Many tribes used the berries as a food supply and included it in their pemmican, a mixture of nuts, meat and dried fruit which served as a suitable food when travelling and hunting. The Iroquois cooked elderberries and served them with com bread. They would sun-dry the berries and store them for winter food supplies. The Meskwaki prepared the berries as a conserve. The wood of the tree was useful in bow making. Straigth stems would be selected and dried, and from this arrows were made. The Iroquois would soak their... [Pg.15]

At the ice cream store, there are two choices of size (small and large), three choices of flavors (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry) and a choice of two toppings (nuts or whipped cream) to make a sundae. How many sundaes, consisting of one size, one flavor, and one topping are possible ... [Pg.270]

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spread 2 cups whole almonds in one layer in a baking pan, and toast in the middle of the oven for 12 to 14 minutes, or until the skins start to darken and toast. Rub the almonds in a damp dishtowel to remove most of the skin. It s okay if some skin remains. Let cool completely before grinding. In small batches, grind the almonds in a clean coffee grinder, mini food processor, or nut grinder until fine and powdery, taking care to make sure that the nuts near the blade don t get too hot and turn into almond butter Extra ground almonds can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. [Pg.65]

In the case of selective extraction of compounds from steam distillate after pH adjustment, about 1.5 L distillate were collected by co-distilling 200 g of powdered nuts with 2.5 L of water. The basic, neutral and acidic compounds were extracted using either methylene chloride or ether and the solvent was removed by distillation. In the case of the acidic fraction, the ether extract was methylated by refluxing with methanol-sulphuric acid (50 1) reagent for 2 hours. The methylated samples were washed free of acid and extracted with redistilled hexane, dried and stored frozen. [Pg.356]

When storing burettes with stopcocks, leave the locking nut on a Teflon stopcock loose. Then, if the stopcock gets warm, the swelling Teflon plug is less likely to swell and stick, or split the walls of the barrel. [Pg.117]

Teflon Stopcocks. Teflon stopcocks should never be stored with the locking nut tightened. Teflon flows under pressure, and such pressure could squeeze the plug up and into the holes of the barrel (see Fig. 3.29). Teflon plugs are tapered at a 1 5 ratio rather than the 1 10 ratio of glass stopcocks to help relieve some of these pressures. [Pg.194]

Practice Problem 10.16 How many pounds of cashew nuts, at 8.00 per pound, can be purchased with 150.00 if the store has 20.0 pounds of the nuts ... [Pg.282]

Smart drugs are a diverse group of compounds. Some are prescription drugs marketed openly in this country. Others are prescription drugs from other countries not generally available here that can be obtained by mail order or from Mexico. Still others can be had in health food stores and from other sources selling nut riti 0-1.11 supplements... [Pg.226]

You may hear about getting omega-3s from plant sources, especially flaxseed and flaxseed oil but also from soybeans, canola and walnut oils, and various kinds of nuts. All of those foods contain a far less potent form of the beneficial fatty acids called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). You may even see ALA supplements on sale in health food stores and pharmacies, but only a fraction, a small fraction, of ALA is converted by the body into EPA and DHA. Stick with the fish oils or the concentrated ethyl ester supplements. [Pg.181]

Today s leader, Frito-Lay Inc. of Texas, has brought about the most dramatic evolution in the American snack food industry. In 1932, Mr. Ehner Doolin of San Antonio started the Fritos brand Com Chips, and Mr. Herman W. Lay started to sell potato chips to the stores in Nashville, TN. In September of 1961, just 29 years after the two companies began their ventures, the Frito Company and H. W. Lay Company merged to become the Frito-Lay Company. In 1965, Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola merged. Today, Frito-Lay is the leading snack food producing company in the world. The company sells numerous salty snack food products that include potato chips, com chips, extmded products, nuts, and a variety of other products. [Pg.2258]

Out on Bandera Road, a suburban corridor of nightmarish traffic congestion, I pull into a swimming pool supply store. This is a really small store with no customers and a big farm boy standing behind the counter. I sit down on the floor and start to furiously take notes. I can tell that this is making the farm boy totally nuts So he comes over and I explain my quest for alternative chem sources. He is very helpful and forthcoming after that. A lot of pure chemicals here. Most of them manufactured by Bio Lab of Decatur, GA. [Pg.217]
