Borophycin (15) was found to display appreciable c5dotoxicity against LoVo cells (MIC 0.066 pg/mL) and KB cells (MIC 3.3 pg/mL). It was isolated from the lipophilic extract of a marine strain of the blue-green alga Nostoc linckia [53]. Borophycin is made up of two identical halves with an overall structure reminiscent of other boron-containing antibiotics. The C3 starter unit for the biosynthesis of 15 is derived from acetate and methionine, but not propionate. [Pg.850]

PCC7120, Anabaena cylindrica IAM M-l, Anabaena variabilis IAM M-58, Anabaenopsis circularis IAM M-4, Nostoc muscorum IAM M-14, Nostoc linckia IAM M-30, Nostoc commune IAM M-13, Nostoc carneum IAM M-35, Cylindrospermum muscicola IAM M-32, Anabaena cylindrica UTEX B 629, Anabaena flos-aquae UTEX 1444, and Anabaena flos-aquae UTEX LB 2558. Anabaena sp. PCC7120 was kindly donated by Dr. Ohmori of the University of Tokyo. Compounds isolated from the genus Nostoc (order Nostocales, 73 compounds) have predominantly been isolated from unknown species (91%). Nostoc commune accounts for only 6% of the isolated compounds with Nostoc linckia, Nostoc muscorum, and Nostoc spongiaeforme, each responsible for about 1 %. [Pg.144]

Borophycin was isolated from the cyanobacterium Nostoc linckia in 1994. This cyclic polyester is dosely related to aplasmomycin A, another derivative containing an atom of boron, which occurs in Plasmodium berghei (Apicomplexa). [Pg.32]
