These results demonstrate some interesting chemical principles of the use of acrylic adhesives. They stick to a broad range of substrates, with some notable exceptions. One of these is galvanized steel, a chemically active substrate which can interact with the adhesive and inhibit cure. Another is Noryl , a blend of polystyrene and polyphenylene oxide. It contains phenol groups that are known polymerization inhibitors. Highly non-polar substrates such as polyolefins and silicones are difficult to bond with any technology, but as we shall see, the initiator can play a big role in acrylic adhesion to polyolefins. [Pg.824]

Phenylene oxide-based resins (Noryl ) epoxy, polyisocyanate, polyvinyl butyral, nitrile rubber, neoprene rubber, polyurethane rubber, polyvinyUdene chloride, and acrylic. Polyethylene-nitrile rubber, polyisobutylene rubber, flexible epoxy, nitrile-phenolic, and water-based (emulsion) adhesives. Polystyrene for these foams (expanded polystyrene (EPS)), aromatic solvent adhesives (e.g., toluol) can cause collapse of the foam cell walls. For this reason, it is advisable to use either 100% solids adhesives or water-based adhesives based on SBR or polyvinyl acetate. Specific adhesives recommended include urea-formaldehyde, epoxy, polyester-isocyanate, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, and reclaim rubber. Satisfactory tensile shear stresses may be achieved in the bonding of glass-filled Noryl or PPO parts with a variety of epoxy, rubber-based, or silicone adhesives. Excellent bond strengths of greater than 5,500 psi have been obtained with Allaco M-2 adhesive (Allaco Products). None of the adhesives listed in Table 5-2 show any evidence of attack on glass-filled PPO or Noryl. [Pg.300]
