Non-corrosive

In the 1950 s, crude oils were either corrosive (sour), or non-corrosive (sweet). Crudes containing more than 6 ppm of dissolved H2S were classed as sour because, beyond this limit, corrosion was observed on the walls of storage tanks by formation of scales of pyrophoric iron sulfides. 

Another convenient heating liquid is medicinal paraffin it has a low speciSc heat, is non-inflammable and is non-corrosive, but it can only be safely heated to about 220° above this temperature it begins to decompose slightly. 

Ethanol water is a solution of denatured grain alcohol. Its main advantage is that it is nontoxic and thus is widely used in the food and chemic industry. By using corrosion inhibitors it could be made non-corrosive for brine service. It is more expensive than methanol water and has somewhat lower heat transfer coefficients. As an alcohol derivate it is flammable. 

The electrolytes are non-corrosive and the electrodes do not corrode with time. This feature is of special significance when compared with an ordinary liquid resistance starter used commonly for slip-ring motors. Electrolytes do not deteriorate and therefore do not require replacement. The evaporated liquid can be replenished with drinking water when the level of the electrolyte falls as a result of evaporation. In Europe such starters have been used for over 15-20 years. Electrolyte switching is a costlier proposition compared to direct on-line or star/delta switching due to additional shorting contactor and timer, and the cost of electrolyte, its tank and thermostatic control etc. The cost may. 

Plastics also find increasing use in vehicles for both water and air transport. Glass-fibre-reinforced plastic boats are widely used as a result of their economy in manufacture, ease of maintenance, lightness of weight and, for military purposes, antimagnetic characteristics. The non-corrosive nature of plastics also leads to their widespread use in boat fixtures and fittings. In aircraft, plastics are particularly useful on account of their low density.

Industrially, it is manufactured either by fractional distillation of air, or by electrolysis of sodium hydroxide and it is distributed as a non-liquefied gas in pressurized black cylinders at ca 2200 psig at 21°C. Since it is non-corrosive no special materials of construction are required. 

Liquid sulphur dioxide may cause eye and skin burns resulting from the freezing effects upon evaporation. Dry sulphur dioxide is non-corrosive to common materials of construction except zinc. The presence of moisture renders the environment corrosive. 

A non-corrosive substance which, through immediate, prolonged or repeated contact with the skin or mucous membrane, can cause inflammation.

PSA coated tapes are used for a variety of applications in the electrical industry, but they have to meet additional requirements to be accepted in this industiy The adhesive are typically expected to be non-corrosive, they need to have good dielectric properties, they need to hold out moisture, and they need to show good flame retardaney. Espeeially for eleetronic applieations, little or no outgassing is aeceptable, and the adhesive should not introduce migratory contaminants resulting from exposure to release coatings or the presence of additives. 

Typically, a corrosion allowance of 0.125 in. for non-corrosive service and 0.250 in. for corrosive service is added to the wall thickness calculated in Equations 12-1 to 12-4.

If large compressor plant requires clear headroom for cranes, air intakes may have to mn through under floor piping or ducting. Intake ducts must be of a cross-sectional area sufficiently large to avoid excessive pressure drop, and the number of bends should be kept to a minimum. The ducts should be of non-corrosive material and care should be taken that extraneous material cannot enter the duct. The duct should be cleaned thoroughly before connection to the compressor. 

An ideal hydraulic liquid should be free from acids that cause corrosion of the metals in the system. Most liquids cannot be expected to remain completely non-corrosive under severe operating conditions. When new, the degree of acidity of a liquid may be satisfactory but after use, the liquid may tend to become corrosive as it begins to deteriorate. 

Corrosive species in the atmospheres include water, salts and gases. Clean atmospheres contain little other than oxygen, nitrogen, water vapor and a small quantity of carbon dioxide. These species are virtually non-corrosive to any of the common constructional materials for plant at normal temperatures. Steel is susceptible to corrosion in even fairly clean air where water can exist as liquid. For plant operating at temperatures up to approximately 100°C coatings are employed to protect steel if required. In clean air corrosion rates are low, and corrosion is primarily a cosmetic problem, although it may be necessary to prevent mst staining of nearby materials.
