In the United States—where the inhabitants were considered filthy, bordering on the beastly —basins, pitchers, and washstands did not become middle-class essentials until after 1850. During the American Civil War, the North adopted Florence Nightingale s nursing reforms to popularize hygiene and keep its soldiers disease-free. 

Uncle Jack survived the horrific Battle of the Somme in World War I, but died of antiseptic poisoning by phenol in hospital, where he was treated for an ingrowing toe nail by a Florence Nightingale-type nurse. Phenol was discovered in 1834 to be slightly acidic with antiseptic properties (a weak 5 % solution was called carbolic acid and was used to kill germs ). When used in the first World War it probably killed many soldiers through overuse, due to its acidic burning effect upon the skin and tissues. More sophisticated antiseptics are now used.

The Crimean War (1853-1856) increased the need for nurses. During the war, Florence Nightingale, as supervisor of the nursing staff, devloped a new approach to patient care. She published a description of her approach in Notes on Nursing What It Is and WhatItIsNot( 8GD). 

National nurses week is celebrated each year starting May 6 and ending May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.
