The websites cited for Chapter 1 are meant to be resources that provide links to a broad array of valuable information on drug use and on drug abuse and its prevention and treatment. Indeed, the three sites may be used to locate specific information associated with any chapter in this book. The three resources are the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)... [Pg.37]

As we have seen in reviewing the findings of other surveys, the average or typical results do not apply to all campuses or to all students. Various studies have found that students who drink the least attend religious schools, commuter schools, and historically Black colleges and universities. The students who drink the most are first-year students. Whites, members of fraternities and sororities, and athletes (NIAAA, 2002). [Pg.209]

The first type of pharmacotherapy for alcohol problems uses compounds that alter the metabolism of alcohol if it is consumed. Peachey and Annis (1985) reviewed these compounds, which they called the alcohol-sensitizing drugs. The most popular of these are disulfiram (trade name Antabuse) and carbimide (Temposil). Antabuse has been in use in the United States since 1948. Temposil, on the other hand, is not available in the United States and is used less frequently overall than Antabuse (NIAAA, 2000). In any case, use of both agents in treatment is based on similar assumptions regarding the psychological effects of their chemical action. [Pg.391]
