The atmospheric research stations on materials from different kinds, may be use to evaluate the behavior of previously conceive and elaborated materials when they are under the aetion of the aggressive agents from the Cuban climate. These stations are useful for the seleetion of new protecting systems to prevent the aging process on different materials and also to confirm the validity of the results obtained during the researches recommended to cany out. [Pg.44]

A large number of parameters are involved in the choice of the corrosion protection system and the provision of the proteetion eurrent these are deseribed elsewhere (see Chapters 6 and 17). In partieular, for new locations of fixed production platforms, a knowledge of, for example, water temperature, oxygen content, conductivity, flow rate, chemical composition, biological activity, and abrasion by sand is useful. Measurements must be carried out at the sea location over a long period, so that an increased margin of safety can be calculated. [Pg.368]

The protection station must be carefully maintained (see Section 10.5). The function of the rectifier should be monitored at monthly intervals. The pipe/soil potentials of the pipelines should be measured at least once a year. The IR-free potentials should be determined as far as possible by the switching method, especially when new pipework is installed and connected to the protection system. [Pg.426]

The preparation of this third edition after about 10 years since publication of the second edition of this handbook has required a complete revision of the major part of the book. The reason is not only new developments in technology and application, but also the identification of vital factors in the protection system. Developments in standards and regulations also had to be taken into account. [Pg.580]

The measurement of current densities in the vicinity of a cathodically protected structure is a comparatively new principle used chiefly to monitor the effectiveness of offshore protection systems. These measurements are undertaken by twin half-cell devices either installed for stationary use or moved about the structure by diver or remote controlled vehicle. [Pg.259]

In a Japanese plasma wind tunnel, SPA specimens were tested up to 3.8 MW/m2 at 0.7 bar aerodynamic pressure (Fig. 12). After a test duration of 60 s, no obvious damage was visible. The surface temperature of about 2600°C was reduced to 100°C within 20 min. Further analysis showed a maximum charred depth of the ablator of 15 mm. The carbonization process did not change the geometric dimensions, the new heat protection system can be considered absolutely stable to deformation. The carbonized layer still has a noticeable pressure resistance and transfers the load applied by the dynamic pressure to the structure. [Pg.309]

Effective protection requires at the very least reimbursement for innovators development costs, that is, the costs of producing an original innovation which are not incurred again when the innovator produces new units, and which competitors will not incur even in the first unit they produce. An optimal protection system should offer additional incentives. It should compensate not only development costs but also the risk involved in innovating, and it should internalize society s preferences for certain types of good. Society values some innovations more than others, and thus reward merely for the risk involved in innovating would be insufficient. The size of this additional... [Pg.22]

This chapter discusses the various phases of installation of fire protection systems. Fire protection projects vary from new construction projects to retrofitting an existing system in a facility. Managing a fire protection system project is very much like any other construction or capital improvement project. The... [Pg.327]

Before beginning the installation of a fire protection system, it may be necessary to secure approval from local, state or federal agencies that govern fire protection installations. The facility insurance carrier may request that they be notified of any new fire protection construction or retrofitting of existing systems so that they may offer assistance in managing the change. [Pg.327]

Acceptance tests should be performed on all new or modified fire protection systems. The goal of the final acceptance test is to determine if the fire protection system performance meets the design specification. The installation contractor is responsible for the acceptance test and remains the owner of the fire protection system until the acceptance test has been successfully completed. [Pg.331]

While planned fire protection system impairments may be necessary during testing, maintenance, renovation, and new construction, it must be understood that when any fire protection impairment occurs, the facility is at increased risk of loss. Many large losses that have occurred may have remained small if the fire protection impairments were properly managed. [Pg.349]

Interestingly, fundamentally different stereoinduction mechanisms have been proposed for the activation of a number of related imine substrates, studies that resulted in the development of simple and highly effective new catalytic systems (27) for the addition of silyl ketene acetals to Al-Boc-protected aldimines (Mannich reaction) (Scheme 11.12c). ... [Pg.332]
