The presence of aldehyde groups in the macromolecules of modified PAN made it possible to obtain, as a result of an interaction with dimethyl phosphite at 120 °C, new PAN derivatives containing hydroxy-dimethoxyphosphorylmethyl groups according to the following scheme ... 

Essentially one stream of the old continuous refinery plant was demolished to make way for the installation of five 420 tonne pans, allowing batch refining to commence at reduced capacity. It was a significant achievement that single stream batch refining was successfully commissioned while operators lacked access to walk fully around three of the new pans. 

Can new PAN precursors be developed which are totally free from Na, cheaper and have definitive rate determining stages However, such introductions would involve expensive re-qualification procedures. The reduction of flaws by more effective dope filtration would improve the attainable carbon fiber tensile strength, but there is probably no more latitude for improvement via this route. 

For those Member States that had existing comprehensive legislation specific to genetic modification work (UK, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands), the major impact of the Directives is the new pan-European clearance mechanisms for products. For the remainder of the States, the Directives will establish a new statutory framework.

A relatively new class of high-performance carbon fibers is melt-spun from mesophase pitch, a discotic nematic liquid crystalline material. This variety of carbon fibers is unique in that it can develop extended graphitic crystallinity during carbonization, in contrast to current carbon fibers produced from PAN. 

Further improvements in the properties of PAN-based carbon fibers are likely to emerge through improved stabilization, that is, by creating the ideally cross-linked fiber. On the other hand, as purer pitch precursors become available, further improvements in mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers are likely to arise from optimized spinnerette designs and enhanced understanding of the relationship between pitch chemistry and its flow/orientation behavior. Of course, the development of new precursors offers the potential to form carbon fibers with a balance of properties ideal for a given application.

Tray, Truck, and Tunnel Driers In order to accelerate drying, the closet is factory-built with tight walls. It forms a box, and the air is passed by means of a fan over a radiator or over finned tubes and then over the trays. A portion of the air escapes at the discharge opening the remainder is reheated and recirculated. An amount of new air equivalent to the volume discharged is admitted at the fan. Secondary heating tubes are placed in the path of the air to restore their temperature and heat content. In the tray drier, shallow pans 2 ft by 3 ft by 2 in. deep, for example, are placed on a rack, forming part of the drier. In the truck drier, the rack is on wheels, and the whole may be wheeled in and out of the drier. There may be one or several trucks to each drier, and each truck may have twelve, sixteen or more levels for trays. 

Compartments within the valve separate the various zones to ensure that the separation is sharp and no mixing of mother, strong, middle and weak filtrates occurs during the cycle. To speed up the evacuation of the various filtrates there are valves with two bridge circles, one for the main stream and the another that opens to atmosphere and purges the pan below the deck just before entering a new zone. 

The gamble paid off. The Boeing 747 first flew in February 1969, and it entered service for the first time in January 1970 on Pan American s New York— London route. Boeing is still producing 747s. 

The interest in this problem arises from the desire to eliminate some drawbacks typical of PAN and the materials obtained from it enhanced stiffness, poor dyeability, electrifiability, combustibility, etc., as well as from a wide range of possibilities in producing, based on PAN, new readily available materials with specific technologically valuable properties. 

In our laboratory this kind of research has been systematically carried out for a number of years. A certain progress has been made in developing new promising methods for the chemical modification of PAN and acrylonitrile (AN) copolymers, and in creating new types of fibres with technologically valuable properties. 

Using classical reactions of nitriles of low molecular weight7 a number of conversions can be effected in the PAN polymer chain ontaining new derivatives. 

As it will be shown the presence of an aromatic amino group in the macromolecule of modified PAN offers new possibilities for graft copolymers without the formation of a homopolymer.
