Neurogenesis analysis

Volume I, Adult Neurogenesis and Neural Stem Cells, provides an overview and in-depth analysis of the new field of stem cell research that is the generation of new neuronal cells and the existence of stem cells, in the adult brain of mammals. These discoveries have forced us to re-think and re-evaluate how the brain is functioning, and reveal that the adult brain has the potential for self-repair. This volume covers the basic science of adult neurogenesis and neural stem cell research, from the origin, mechanisms, function, and the therapeutic potential of adult NSCs. [Pg.2]

To date, over 100 papers have been published addressing the issue of postischemic neurogenesis, and the reader is referred to a number of recent reviews for further information and analysis on the topic (Sharp et al. 2002 Kokaia and Lindvall 2003 Felling and Levison 2003 Lindvall and Kokaia 2004 Abrahams et al. 2004 Zhang et al. 2005 Lichtenwalner and Parent 2006). [Pg.5]

El2, corresponding to the time of neurogenesis. However, it remains to be determined if aFGF is specifically involved in neuronal commitment and/or differentiation. Preliminary results, using clonal analysis, suggest that aFGF is not a factor which invokes neuronal differentiation in this system (Kilpatrick, 1993 unpublished observations). [Pg.128]

Different patterns of BrdU application have been used in the literature. We use a 5-day regimen with a twice daily subcutaneous (s.c.) application of 50 mg/kg BrdU. In an alternative regimen, mice are treated with BrdU at a dose of 75 mg/kg bodyweight four times/ day. Animals are subjected to analysis of neurogenesis 3 weeks after the last BrdU dose. [Pg.144]
