Three model areas can be distinguished. Model areas allow defining separated areas in the value chain network to be optimized separately. Model areas can be defined by clustered resources and/or products that have clear interfaces. Defining model area eases the implementation of a comprehensive value chain planning optimization model for a complex value chain network the optimization model can be tested for parts of the value chain network with limited data complexity before extending the model to the entire network. The remainder of this Chapter is organized as follows. In Section 8.2 we will discuss model formulation for petrochemical network planning under uncertainty and with uncertainty and risk consideration, referred to as robust optimization. Then we will briefly explain the concept of value of information and stochastic solution, in Section 8.3. In Section 8.4, we will illustrate the performance of the model through an industrial case study. The chapter ends with concluding remarks in Section 8.5.

This chapter presents a systematic approach for the synthesis and optimisation of an integrated POB with CHP. Optimum material and energy allocation network is determined via proposed approach. In this chapter, problem statement is stated and it is followed by problem formulations. An industrial case study is then solved to illustrate the proposed approach. 

In this section we demonstrate the performance of the proposed model on an industrial-scale case study. Instead of considering the full scale petrochemical network which may have limited application, we consider a special case of the integration problem. Although the proposed formulation covers the full scale refinery network and petrochemical systems, the case study will consider the integration of a petrochemical complex for the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with a multi-refinery network. PVC is one of the major ethylene derivatives that has many important applications and uses, including pipe fittings, automobile bumpers, toys, bottles and many others (Rudd et al., 1981). 

An application case study of the production network optimization model is reported in Chapter 5. In this context the integration of the optimization model into a planning tool to support interactive explorations of the solution space is demonstrated and guidance on how to develop the data required for quantitative strategic network design analyses is provided. Additionally, important analyses that can be performed using the proposed optimization model are introduced and improvement potentials identified in the course of a pilot application in industry are explained. 

SOCOPSE is looking mostly at hazardous priority pollutants to provide guidelines and decision support tools for their management at river basin scale. Its activities include material flow analysis, a series of detailed substances reports, identification of measures and management options, and application to fonr case studies. A strong interaction with industry research networks, authorities and NGOs is envisaged.
