The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was awarded to Erwin Neher and Bert Sakmaim in 1991 for their invention of the patch-clamp technique.

Finally, this chapter oudines only some basic ion channel principles and mechanisms. Those students who would like to expand their knowledge in this exciting field should start with two valuable ion channel books—Ionic Channels of Excitable Membranes, by Bertil HUle, and Single-Channel Recording, edited by the Nobel Prize winners Bert Sakmann and Erwin Neher. 

Many questions have been answered over two decades of intense research in the field of neuronal voltage-dependent Ca " channels. Most of the studies performed were possible only because the group of Professor Baldomero Olivera particularly made available to many groups of researchers potent co-toxins to type and characterize those channels. The same is true for the patch-clamp techniques, which exploded at the same time as co-toxins, thanks to the efforts of the group of professor Erwin Neher. We are sure that some references on this topic escaped our review we apologize to those authors not cited here involuntarily.
