Rock Your World

Smcill plastic butter tub or other plastic container smellier than your Styrofoam or newspaper belli Map of the world  

10 small, flat rocks of various shapes and sizes 

Push one large paperclip through the top of your Styrofoam or newspaper ball. Do the same with the other paperclip on the opposite end (bottom) of the bcdl. These paperclips represent the earth s axis on which your globe can spin. The axis is an imaginary line that runs from the South Pole through the center of the earth to the North Pole. The earth s axis is tilted so that the sun does not shine on the planet the same way every day of the year. As the earth spins round and round on its tilted axis each day and revolves around the sun each year, we experience the different types of weather of the seasons. 

Crunch up your blue construction paper into a bcdl. Spread it flat. 

Cover one side of the construction paper with rubber cement. Cover the Styrofoam or newspaper bcdl with the wrinkled-up construction paper. Be sure to cover the foam or newspaper ball entirely. The paper should remain wrinkled, because this is your wavy ocean floor.

Let the rocks dry completely. Then, hold on to both paperclips and gently spin your world around, just as our earth spins on its axis. Rock Your World ...

What happens is that you create as safe an environment as you can in your home, and then you rarely leave it. I ve really had to develop my inner life — my dreams, my memories, my online relationships — in order to feel satisfied with my life on a daily basis. And I do. I ve never really felt as content as I do now. Part of that has been reevaluating my expectations and finding acceptance in what is. Another part has been slowing down and nurturing myself. But the biggest shift for me was hitting rock bottom mentally and having to rebuild my view of the world — a world that I had some control over. 

We need look no deeper than atoms, at least as long as we wish to consider the material world. All atoms of specific isotopic type, such as carbon 12, are identical, in your body, or mine, or in a lump of coal, or in the rock on a planet of a distant galaxy. 

Next, place your blue ocean bcdl on the plastic tub to dry. The tub will hold the ball in place while you glue down your continents. Using your map of the world as a guide, glue each rock to the blue ball where you think a continent should be. Attach with the rubber cement. Remember a work of art is never exact, so do your best to make it your own design. 

Real-World Reading Link Try dropping a rock from the height of your waist. The rock goes from a higher energy state at your waist to a lower energy state on the floor. A similar process happens with nuclei in an unstable state.
