Dealing with such problems and adopting methodologies to reduce any risk of crop contamination places additional labour, infrastructure and financial burdens on growers. To address such concerns it has been proposed that non-food crop plants unrelated to current food crops and native flora (to avoid risk of crosspollination) should be used as potential hosts for engineered industrial use traits. Crambe, (Crambe abyssinica) has been identified as a suitable model oil crop plant (EPOBIO 2007). Crambe is a plant that has already been commercialised on a relatively small scale to exploit its high erucic acid content. Elsewhere, safflower has been proposed as a potential candidate, as well as the use of algae, moss and the aquatic plant duck weed in contained bioreactor systems. 

Check with your state Natural Heritage Program (or an equivalent program if you live in a country other than the United States) to see what percentage of the native flora and fauna are extinct, endangered, or threatened. See if you can find out why these populations are in trouble ... 

Check with your department of agriculture to see what exotic plants and animals are in your area and what threats they pose to the native flora and fauna. 

I suggest this project to somebody out there in the reading public so that it can finally get done while there is still some native flora left. After a lot of searching, 1 finally found a large patch of the American calamus. (See Figure 4.)... 

Caffeine has historically been an important substance to many segments of society. Primitive tribes discovered caffeine-rich plants in their native flora, and have utilized them as flavorings (coffee, tea, cocoa, guarana, mate, kola) as well as for direct administration of their unique stimulant properties (kola, betel). Such use has continued in modern society, and additionally, caffeine has received widespread application as an ingredient in decongestant/analgesic preparations. 

Heard and Fleet (1988) have shown that additions of more than 50 mg/L bring about a 10-fold reduction in populations of some native yeast. Other species, however, are more resistant than others. For example, Kh-eckera apiculata was not affected by total SO2 levels of 150 mg/L. Other examples of resistant native strains include Zygosaccharomyces and Schizosac-charomyces sp. Osborne et al. (1991) further noted that Candida vmiwas also unaffected by prefermentation total SO2 levels of 50-75 mg/L. Although sulfite may not be as inhibitory to native flora as once believed, prefermentation additions are viewed as crucial in the control of proliferation of LAB and AAB.
