Naphthalene sulphonation

Neville-Wintber acid The trivial name given to 4-hydroxy-1-naphthalene sulphonic acid. [Pg.272]

Schaffer s acid, CioHg04S. 2-hydroxy-7-naphthalene sulphonic acid. Obtained by sulphonating 2-naphthol with a small amount of sulphuric acid at a higher temperature than is used for the preparation of crocein acid. A valuable dyestuff intermediate. [Pg.353]

Wetting agents. These facilitate the wetting of surfaces and aid colloidal stability without foaming. Naphthalene sulphonate/formaldehyde is the most common wetting agent. [Pg.655]

Stability of surfactants in a water matrix, even using different preservation agents, is poor and serious, quantitative and qualitative changes in sample integrity occur if the storage exceeds 7 days. The most suitable preservation additive is formaldehyde (minimum 3%) for non-ionic surfactants and LAS, and acidification to pH < 3 for benzene and naphthalene sulphonates. However, storage for longer than 7 days is not recommended. [Pg.534]

Naphthol Yellow S (citronin A, flavianic acid sodium salt, 8-hydroxy-5,7-dinitro-2-naphthalene sulphonic acid disodium salt) [846-70-8] M 358.2, dec on heating. Greenish yellow powder soluble in H2O. The free sulphonic acid can be recrystd from dil HCl (m 150°) or AcOH-EtOAc (m 148-149.5°). The disodium salt is then obtained by dissolving the acid in two equivalentss of aqueous NaOH and evaporating to dryness and drying the residue in a vacuum desiccator. The sodium salt can be recrystd from the minimum volume of H2O or from EtOH [Dermer and Dermer JACS 61 3302 1939]. [Pg.281]

The chief advantage in the use of this acid is its selective property, whereby certain sulphonic acids are formed, which could not be formed by direct sulphonation with sulphuric acid or oleum, or which might be formed only in presence of other isomers, the separation of which might be difficult. For example, naphthalene sulphonated with oleum at the ordinary temperature gives a mixture of 1 5- and 1 6-disulphonic acids, while chlorosulphonic acid yields only the 1 5-acid. Similarly, with toluene, chiefly the ortho acid is formed. With excess of chlorosulphonic acid a sulphonyl chloride is formed, except in the case of phenols or naphthols, which give the free sulphonic acid. [Pg.317]

Lantz [23 a] has studied the nitration of naphthalene sulphonic acids (mono-, di- and tri-sulphonic acids). He stated that no displacement of the sulphonic groups with nitro groups occurs. By using nitrating concentrated mixtures he was able to introduce nitro groups so that the number of both S03H and N02 groups reached a maximum of four. [Pg.426]
