However, in Nanotechnology Research Directions (a report pubfished by the US government in 1999), it was pointed out that current nanoscale technologies are still highly inferior to those seen in natural systems. The efficiency of the energy conversion that occurs in mitochondrial and photosynthetic systems far exceeds those obtained in artificial systems. A dog can smell and a bat can hear far more sensitively than most artificial sensors. The information pro-... [Pg.166]

The National Cancer Institute oversees a large R D portfolio that further divides research directions. Within the NCI, research is roughly divided into areas of nanodevices and nanomaterials, nanotechnology-enabled therapeutics, diagnosis and biosensors, advanced imaging, and health and safety. [Pg.72]

The potential nanotechnology applications for CB defense described in this chapter are many and varied. Prioritization is needed of all of the possible research directions that the scientific and research community can take in order to achieve the most important goals outlined above. The eight research directions listed here have been identified for priority attention toward this end. More detailed research needs in each area are described in Chapter 5. [Pg.80]

To give policymakers a strategic roadmap to provide a basis for research direction decisions for chemical and biological nanotechnology countermeasures... [Pg.165]

Chapters 1 and 2 provide an overview of the current situation and provide detailed background on the four worlds construct - the scenarios - used to frame the study. Chapter 3 describes the potential applications for nanotechnology in specific areas of CB defense - physical protection, detection and diagnostics, decontamination, and medical countermeasures. Chapter 4 examines the potential for intentional misuse of nanotechnology in the chem-bio regime. Chapter 5 outlines near-term research directions, and Chapter 6 provides a sununary and concluding remarks. [Pg.165]

In recent years, NIOSH has had to find several million dollars from its existing budget for nanotechnology research because no direct research funding has been appropriated. [Pg.12]
