Nanotechnology manufacturing technology

Nanotechnology is an anticipated manufacturing technology giving thorough, inexpensive control of the structure of matter. The term has sometimes been used to refer to any technique able to work at a submicron scale, sometimes called molecular nanotechnology (MNT). The central theory of nanotechnology is that almost any chemically stable structure that can be specified can in fact be built [31-33]. [Pg.209]

This chapter considers policy on a specific area of technology synthetic chemicals. Synthetic chemicals have been manufactured on a large scale for at least 50 years. Unlike genetic engineering and nanotechnology, they are not considered to be new , but despite the decades of production and use there is still a great deal that we do not know about their effects. Time and again novel synthetic chemicals have been found to cause problems that were not expected. [Pg.59]

Another way that nanotechnology may impact solar cells is the use of quantum dots instead of silicon. Quantum dots, which are nanoscale semiconductor crystals, could significantly lower the cost of photovoltaic cells. In 2006, Victor Klimov of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico demonstrated that quantum dots have the capability to react to light and store energy more efficiently than silicon. Although scientists are years away from actually manufacturing usable quantum dot solar cells on a commercial scale, the technology has been established. [Pg.67]
