Normal transmission IRLD can also be used to characterize polymeric fibers, although scattering can induce sloping baselines. Raman spectroscopy then becomes a convenient alternative. Rutledge et al. have recently probed the orientation in electrospun nanofibers composed of a core of Bombyx mori fibroin and an outer shell of poly (ethylene oxide) [24], The orientation values were low, less than 0.1, as is often the case in electrospun fibers.

Polymers consisting of but not limited to poly thiophene, polypyrrole and poly aniline have been extensively used to make polymer nanofibers. In general, any metal that can be electroplated has most likely appeared in a nanowire. Semiconductors, polymers, and insulators have also been used in the design of nanowires.Furthermore, different metals can be plated in succession to give striped nanowires.

At present a few studies of nanofibers and nanombes are focused on CNS drug delivery. One study evaluated electrospun nanofibers of a degradable polymer, PLGA, loaded with antiinflammatory agent, dexamethasone, for neural prosthetic applications (Abidian and Martin, 2005). A conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), was deposited to the nano-fiber surface and the coated nanofibers were then mounted on the microfabricated neural microelectrodes, which were implanted into brain. The drug was released by electrical stimulation that induced a local dilation of the coat and increased permeability.
