Among the plant phenols, the flavonoids and the anthocyanidins, belonging to the 1,3-diphenylpropans, have been studied in most detail, mainly because of their potential health benefits. With more than 4,000 different flavonoids known, systematic studies of the effects of variation in molecular structure on physico-chemical properties of importance for antioxidative effects have also been possible (Jovanovic et al, 1994 Seeram and Nair, 2002). Nair et al. studied the kinetics of the polymerization of MMA at 60-95 °C using N,1SP-diethyl-NjW-di(hydroxyethyl)thiuram disulfide (30a) as the thermal in-iferter [142]. The dependence of the iniferter concentration on the polymerization rate was examined. The chain transfer constant of the propagating radical of MMA to 30a was determined to be 0.23-0.46 at 60-95 °C, resulting in the activation energy of 37.6 kj/mol for the chain transfer. Other derivatives 30b-30d were also prepared and used to derive telechelic polymers with the terminal phosphorus, amino, and other functional aromatic groups [143-145]. Thermal polymerization was also investigated with the end-functional poly(St) and poly(MMA) which were prepared using the iniferter 13 [146].

Nair and co-workers reported the diastereoselective synthesis of spiro y-butyro-lactones from 1,2-dicarbonyls [125]. The authors studied the reaction with 1,2-cyclohexane dione 230 which produces the desired lactone 232 in good yields Eq. 22a. Isatins 233 are more reactive, but the products 235 are obtained as a 1 1 separable mixture of diastereomers Eq. 22b. The Nair research group extended this methodology to include homoenolate addition to tropanone 236 to form bicyclic 5-lactones 238 Eq. 22c [126].

Padwa et al. (44) studied the diazo-decomposition of 119 and found that the cyclic ylide 120 could be trapped by a variety of heterodipolarophiles such as ethyl cyanoacetate (Mander s reagent) to provide aminal 121 or with benzaldehyde to generate the bicyclic acetal 122. In both cases, only a single isomer was formed, with the regiochemistry easily predicted from frontier orbital considerations. Nair et al. (45) were able to employ the highly functionalized o-quinone 125 for the trapping of carbonyl ylide 124 to provide the highly complex cycloadduct 126 in 76% yield. 

These electrons reduce elemental S formed in Reaction (3.21) or (3.22) to give sulphide (or hydrosulphide) ions, as in Reaction (3.24), which react with the metal ions. The general mechanism of sulphide generation has been assumed in most studies using thiosulphate, e.g., Nair et al [78] for SbzSs deposition and Groz-danov et al. in their study of Cu S deposition from Cu-thiosulphate solutions [76], although in this latter study it is noted that the mechanism may be more complicated in this Cu-S system.

The hypothesis that dairy foods contain a cholesterol-lowering milk factor evolved from the observation that Maasai tribesmen of East Africa have low serum concentrations of cholesterol and a low incidence of cardiovascular disease in spite of their consumption of 4 to 5 liters/day of fermented whole milk (Mann and Spoerry 1974). Subsequently, sufficient amounts of yogurt, as well as unfermented milk (whole, lowfat, skim), were reported to exhibit a hypocholesterolemic effect both in humans and in laboratory animals in several studies (Mann 1977 Howard and Marks 1977, 1979 Nair and Mann 1977 Kritchevsky et al 1979 Richardson 1978 Hussi etal. 1981). However, not all investigators have observed a hypocholesterolemic effect of milk. This inconsistency may be explained in part by differences in the experimental design and in the specific type of dairy food used by investigators.

Reproductive Effects. No studies were found regarding the reproductive toxicity of chlorobenzene in humans. In a two-generation inhalation study, chlorobenzene did not adversely affect various reproductive parameters in rats (Nair et al. 1987). While results of this study suggest reproductive toxicity may not be an area of concern to humans, other considerations are warranted before firm conclusions can be made regarding risk to humans. When applied to the dyestuffs experiment, the Brenneman-Nair method determines that there are enough residual degrees of freedom to study dispersion effects. However, the method gets stuck at the next step due to the inability of the modified Harvey s method to handle the machine-zero residuals. 

If the location model is too large, do not attempt to study dispersion effects. The Brenneman-Nair (2001) condition is a good guideline.
