These mutants are protected by several patent publications, e.g., Mycobacterium species CBS174 obtained from Mycobacterium species NRRL, Mycobacterium vaccae ZIMET 11052175 obtai ned from M. vaccae NRRL-B-3805, Mycobacterium roseum sp. nov. 1108/1 176, and Mycobacterium fortuitum NRRL-B-8119177 obtained from M.fortuitum ATCC 6842. Furthermore, Mycobacterium fortuitum NRRL-B-12433178, a double mutant obtained from M. fortuitum NRRL-B-8119, is able to partially degrade the side chain of sitosterol (7), with concomitant 9a-hydroxylation, to give the pregnadiene-20-carboxylic acid 8. 

Organisms of the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) commonly cause disseminated bacterial infection among patients with AIDS. There is evidence that immunoprophylaxis against MAC infection may be possible. A heat-killed Mycobacterium vaccae vaccine was given in a three-dose schedule to 12 HIV-infected adults with CD4 cell counts below 300 x 10 /1 (107). The vaccine was well tolerated and produced detectable immunological responses in 3 of 11 subjects who completed the trial.

Methane, butane, and chloroform — Cells of Methylosinus trichos-porium grown with methane and of P. butanovora and Mycobacterium vaccae grown with butane were able to partially degrade chloroform (Hamamura et al. 1997). Again, this may be the result of the induction of monooxygenase activity. 

Butane-grown cells of Mycobacterium vaccae strain JOB5 were able to degrade chloroform without addition of an electron donor.
