Mutually exclusive, definition

Among the differential diagnoses are acute rejection, ATN, and/or cyclosporine or tacrolimus toxicity (see Chap. 46). These processes are not mutually exclusive. Definitive diagnosis is made by renal biopsy. In the presence of an elevated serum creatinine level, clinicians may reduce the dose of cyclosporine or tacrolimus to minimize the potential for drug nephrotoxicity and hasten the recovery from ATN. This practice may result in subtherapeutic immunosuppressant concentrations and hasten the occurrence of acute rejection. DGF predisposes patients to acute rejection. Induction therapy (e.g., using antibody preparations) and delaying the initiation of cyclosporine or tacrolimus administration may be useful in this setting. [Pg.1615]

Quality, service, cost, and technology are not mutually exclusive. One can t distinguish between a quality improvement and a service or technology improvement. It was necessary only to mention quality and cost, as an improvement in service must be an improvement in either the quality or cost of the service - all other factors come within the definition of quality. Improvements in technology are also improvements in quality or cost. Such improvements may improve the quality of design, quality of conformance, or quality of use (see Part 1 Chapter 1 under Quality parameters) or may cause a reduction in cost while not providing any change in product or service characteristics. [Pg.109]

Note, however, that the frequency/malfunction relationship is not mutually exclusive and a specific mechanical problem cannot definitely be attributed to a unique frequency. While frequency is a very important piece of information with regard to isolating machinery malfunctions, it is only one part of the total picture. It is necessary to evaluate all data before arriving at a conclusion. [Pg.674]

A cursory examination of these definitions reveals that they are not mutually exclusive, leading to confusion about how to appropriately and consistently apply them. This point is illustrated when one reviews the history of how the FDA has categorized and subsequently regulated these drugs and biologies as shown below. [Pg.40]

This aspect of precaution is taken as the working definition in the EU. Although three identifiable interpretations of precaution exist, they are not mutually exclusive (see Appendix 2.3). It is therefore more appropriate to consider various interpretations as aspects rather than versions of the application of the precautionary principle (Appendix 2.3). [Pg.58]

These conflicting results can probably be explained by important differences in the characteristics of the patients and the study methods. The inclusion criteria in the two studies were mutually exclusive patients with long-term NSAID use and a history of ulceration were excluded in the first study and included in the second. Furthermore, there were differences in the definition of endoscopic ulcers, the eradication regimen, the definition of H. pylori infection, and the length of follow-up. [Pg.2563]

Since heat and work are by definition mutually exclusive exchanges of energy between the system and the surroundings, we shall qualitatively classify work as energy that can be transferred to or from a mechanical state, or mode, of the system, while heat is the transfer of energy to atomic or molecular states, or modes, which are not macroscopically observable. [Pg.370]

It is important to note that the phases described above are not mutually exclusive and are not necessarily performed in strict linear order. These definitions have become increasingly blurred with the accelerated development plans seen with drugs for the treatment of serious and life-threatening disorders. It is becoming more important to ask of each study what will be learned and what does the study contribute to proof of either efficacy or safety, or ultimately to the product label ... [Pg.703]

An emulsion polymerization requires the mechanism of polymer particle nudeation to reside outside the monomer droplets. This physical-chemical process involves a series of radical reactions in the continuous phase followed by homogeneous or micellar particle formation. Either of these mechanisms require the initiator to be insoluble in the monomer phase, such as a water soluble initiator and an organically soluble monomer, or vice versa. If, in contrast, the initiator is soluble in the monomer phase, all the components of the reaction are contained in the dispersed phase and the continuous phase serves only to decrease the viscosity and dissipate heat Such polymerizations are categorized as suspensions. The second definition, however, makes no statement as to the magnitude of n and therefore the two criteria are mutually exclusive. [Pg.123]

An initiating event is an event that triggers an accident sequence—e.g., a wave that exceeds the jacket s capacity that, in turn, triggers a blowout that causes failures of the foundation. As initiating events, they are mutually exclusive only one of them starts the accident sequence. A catastrophic platform failure can start by failure of the foundation, failure of the jacket, or failure of the deck. These initiating failures are also (by definition) mutually exclusive and constitute the basic events of the [probabilistic risk assessment] model in its simplest form. [152, p. 121]... [Pg.33]

The models for each property showed that the relations between the property and composition and that the relations between the properties themselves are complicated and sometimes even mutually exclusive increasing the amount of polymer increases the flexibility and waterproofness but decreases vapor permeability, increase of waterproofness by adding more fillers does not causes the increase of flexibility, the vapor permeability is not clearly disproportional to waterproofness. It was shown that some relations which had seemed to be obvious when considering the composite material such as polymer-cement coating have not worked. That is why the specific definition of the expectations is so necessary and why the desirable material properties, their importance and weights of empiric data must be defined precisely. Using elaborated material models is very helpful in designing materials. [Pg.200]

The definition of corrosive chemicals is very broad. However, in the sense that the action of the chemical will result in an immediate, acute erosive effect on tissue as well as other materials, strong acids and bases, dehydrating agents, and oxidizing agents are commonly considered to be corrosive materials. These terms may not be mutually exclusive. [Pg.296]

The axiomatic definition of probability uses the set theory. A certain event X is the event that occurs in every trial. The union A + B of two events A and B is the event that occnrs when A or B both occur. The intersection AB of the events A and B is the event that occurs when both events A and B occur. The events A and B are mutually exclusive if the occurrence of one of them excludes the occurrence of the other. Three postulates are given. The probability P(A) of an event A is... [Pg.336]

Besides the homogeneity condition, the other two statistic requirements for the subset definition are that the set of subsets should be complete, exhaustive and mutually exclusive, and the statistic independence of the subsets. [Pg.936]

Percolation phenomena deal with the effect of clustering and coimectivity of microscopic elements in a disordered medium [129], Percolation theory represents a random composite material as a network or lattice structure of two or more distinct types of microscopic elements or phase domains, the so-called percolation sites. These elements represent mutually exclusive physical properties, e.g., electrically conducting vs. isolating phase domains, pore space vs. solid matrix, atoms with spin up vs. spin down states. Here, we will refer to black and white elements for definiteness. The network onto which black and white elements of the composite medium are distributed could be continuous (continuum percolation) or discrete (discrete or lattice percolation) it could be a disordered or regular network. With a probability p a randomly chosen percolation site will be... [Pg.408]

There are sometimes multiple parallel conditional branches in a branch like the following description (a) in figure 7. Operations in branch (cl) and branch (c2) are not mutually exclusive. In this case, the basic CVs for these operation can t be determined by the former definition. Therefore, such kind of branch is converted into multiple basic branches, in which operations can have its basic CVs. The converted description is the description (b) in figure . These two descriptions produce the same outputs. The (b) description can be scheduled by the multiple branches scheduling. More complicated case can be handled in the same way. Such transformation is processed by the tCFG optimizer before generating CDFG. [Pg.140]

Section 2.3 discussed how context is (somewhat vaguely) defined in authoritative guides to GSN. Section 3.3 showed that context elements in assured safety arguments function as claims of acceptable instantiation and fitness for role. These definitions are mutually exclusive. Clarification and identification of reference material cannot introduce new claims. Introduction of claims contradicts the prohibition on using context elements to refer to information which is intended to support the validity of a claim [3, Sect. 2.6.2.Ij. [Pg.148]
