Glycidol is mutagenic, testing positive in the histidine reversion-Ames test. There is no report of its carcinogenic action. Oral and intraperitoneal administration of glycidol in rats showed harmful effects on fertility. 

Laboratory tests on animals indicated clear evidence of its cancer-causing actions, producing uterine and skin tumors. There is so far no report on such carcinogenic actions in humans. The compound tested positive in mutagenic tests and caused fetal deaths and birth defects in mice, rats, and hamsters when given orally or intraperi-toneally. 

The in vitro and in vivo test methods available to study combined actions and toxicological and biochemical interactions of chemicals in mixtures are essentially the same as those used for the study of single chemicals in order to examine their potential general toxicity and special effects such as mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and reproductive toxicity. 

Safety of Enterosgel preparation in terms of mutagenic action has been shown in the tests for induction of chromosome aberrations in bone marrow cells, in cultured human peripheral blood lymphocytes, and in the Ames test for induction of reversible gene mutations in Salmonella typhimurium.
