The software employed for the eritieal elements (memory, alarming, tripping, and eommunieating with the host eomputer) uses a real-time operating system and resides in the main CPU. Products in Group 3 seem to us to represent the future of practical batch process control. In such systems, modern workstations perform the single-user functions (e.g control system design, set-up, and maintenance operator interface data collection historical reporting) for which they were designed, while powerful multitasking controllers perform actual control. As computer hardware and software standards continue to evolve toward distributed networks of processors optimized for specific kinds of tasks, such systems will, we feel, proliferate rapidly.

New substances of this family are in development, and we cannot exclude the possibility that oriented modifications of the molecules of SERMs, statins, or prostaglandin inhibitors will be able to enhance their effect on the breast or bone, maintaining equivalent power in their genuine indication. Knowing that a perfect multitasking molecule is unlikely, we can expect to obtain the maximal benefit from a single pharmacological intervention with substances with relevant added positive effects.

Smart materials are extremely efficient, performing a variety of jobs that would otherwise require researchers and engineers to spend a lot of time and money to develop and design a number of different substances. Materials capable of multitasking are one of the most interesting and promising frontiers of chemistry and materials science. This chapter describes research on a variety of materials and systems that exhibit some degree of responsiveness to their environment. 

The ability to multitask is an absolute necessity for any pharmacist or pharmacy student. This does not mean doing several things simultaneously—if that were the case, you would never get anything fully accomplished, and patient safety certainly would be compromised. What it does mean, however, is that it is important that you have the ability to switch gears easily and maintain a sharp mind so that you can give your undivided attention for a few moments to the task at hand and then move on to the next task or back to the original task. Rarely will you have full days without any appointments or activities scheduled so that you can spend the entire day on one task.
