The antioxidant system in humans is a complex network composed by several enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants. In addition to being an antioxidant, lycopene also exerts indirect antioxidant properties by inducing the production of cellular enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, and quinone reductase that also protect cells from reactive oxygen species and other electrophilic molecules (Goo and others 2007). [Pg.207]

From the biological point of view, the effect of anaerobiosis has been characterized in purely anaerobic, facultative anaerobic, and aerobic bacteria, in yeasts, and in tissues from higher organisms [6-12], From these studies it can be deduced that almost every azo compound can be biologically reduced under anaerobic conditions [4]. Reduced flavins are produced by cytosol flavin-dependent reductases [6, 13], while quinone reductase activity located in the plasma membrane [14] and extracellular azo reductase activities [9, 15] were also observed. [Pg.199]

This enzyme [EC 1.6.99.2] (also known as NAD(P)H quinone reductase, DT diaphorase, quinone reductase, azoreductase, phylloquinone reductase, and menadione reductase) catalyzes the reaction of NAD(P)H with an acceptor to produce NAD(P) and the reduced acceptor. This FAD-dependent enzyme is inhibited by dicoumarol. [Pg.497]
