Multipurpose adhesives

Nitrocellulose [9004-70-0] is used as a raw material for solvent adhesives (multipurpose adhesives, shoe adhesives), although in recent years it has been increasingly overtaken in importance by other polymers. 

Adhesion Adhesives. The best known solvent-containing adhesives are the multipurpose adhesives. They can not join every type of substrate, but can bond a wide range of substrates with different results. They contain as binders high molecular mass compounds that adhere to many different surfaces, preferably nitrocellulose and polyfvinyl acetate). Today, multipurpose adhesives based on polychloroprene rubber generally are used as adhesives for rubber articles. 

Multipurpose adhesives are very versatile and can be used to bond most materials such as cardboard, paper, felt, textiles, wood, metal, glass, and plastics. They are also used for small-scale assembly or as a handicraft adhesive. Depending on the material, the bonding strengths achieved are different and in most cases on a medium level. 

The solvent-free multipurpose adhesives contain transparent to opaque dispersions or solutions based on polyurethane or acrylate. In addition, white dispersions based on poly(vinyl acetate) or acrylate (so-called white glues) are available for all-purpose applications. The solvent-containing types mostly consist of poly(vinyl acetate), vinyl acetate copolymers, or nitrocellulose, dissolved in a solvent mixture of esters, ketones, and alcohols.

Stoddard solvent is a multipurpose petroleum solvent (McDermott 1975). Industrial uses include paint vehicles thinning agent for paints, coatings, and waxes printing inks adhesives and as a solvent in liquid photocopier toners (Air Force 1989b McDermott 1975). Stoddard solvent is commonly used at air fields as a degreaser for precision engine parts in machine shops and in automotive repair applications. 

Most of the published papers and patents focused on the utilization of the emulsion solvent removal methods in the production of microspheres of the single or the multipurpose types. The degree of adhesive penetration into dentin was studied by micro-Raman spectroscopic examination of the dentin/ adhesive interface. In contrast to previous studies, the Scotchbond multipurpose dentin adhesive penetrated less than 2 micrometres into the acid-etched and, thus, decalcified dentin. There was strong spectroscopic evidence that, upon acid etching of the dentin surface, which was typically performed immediately before the adhesive was applied, the collagen matrix collapsed upon itself. 21 refs. 3M CO. 

Also by combining both the systems, i.e. rolls below the sheet and rolls on top, we get a multipurpose machine, which may handle high and low viscosities and apply the adhesive on both sides of the sheet simultaneously (Fig. 46).
