Multiple innovations

In order to assess the relative effects of different innovations it is important to try out multiple innovations at each site and across sites. Within a site it is possible to hold constant the teachers, students, school culture, etc. in order to make comparisons. Across sites it is possible to vary these same factors systematically. [Pg.17]

The textiles industry traces its roots back to handicraft processes, and despite the fact that textile manufacturing was an area in which multiple innovations and breakthroughs in production techniques were made during the early days of industrialisation. [Pg.333]

Since these early groundbreaking studies, the field of conjugate addition reactions has experienced noteworthy advances. The reactions constitute a vital method for the formation of new bonds f to carbonyl groups. Multiple innovative approaches to effect diastereoselective [21, 27-36] and enantio-selective [34—47] conjugate additions of a wide variety of nucleophiles to an equally large spectrum of acceptors have appeared. These form the greater part of the discussion in this chapter (Sections 12.2-12.7), followed by sections on conjugate reductions (12.8) [32, 38] and recent advances in enantioselective Stetter reactions (12.9) [41, 48, 49]. [Pg.389]

Because of the complexity of the polyether antibiotics tittle progress has been made in stmcture determination by the chemical degradation route. X-ray methods were the techniques most successfully applied for the early stmcture elucidations. Monensin, X206, lasalocid, lysocellin, and salinomycin were included in nineteen distinct polyether x-ray analyses reported in 1983 (190). Use of mass spectrometry (191), and H (192) and nmr (141) are also reviewed. More recently, innovative developments in these latter techniques have resulted in increased applications for stmcture determinations. Eor example, heteronuclear multiple bond connectivity (hmbc) and homonuclear Hartmann-Hahn spectroscopy were used to solve the stmcture of portimicin (14) (193). East atom bombardment mass spectrometry was used in solving the stmctures of maduramicin alpha and co-factors (58). [Pg.172]

Those inventions that are valuable for society, which include innovative pharmaceuticals, generate positive externalities, that is, the benefits falls to society at large. The sum of these benefits gives the social benefit or value of the invention. In this way, patents represent the appropriation of part of this social value. Naturally, when businesses decide to undertake a project they do so with their own benefit in mind. Some research, particularly basic research, might not be undertaken in these circumstances, and therefore governments decide to invest to fill the gap that may be left by the patent system. Basic research allows the development of multiple applications and the discovery of scientific principles. The field of genetics is a prime example of this. [Pg.26]

As shown by the activity and aims of the terrorist groups discussed in this section, regional conflicts can directly affect Western security and safety, particularly as these conflicts fuel innovation and the interaction and training of multiple terrorist groups. [Pg.36]

PIST distinguishes itself from other spectral transform Lanczos methods by using two important innovations. First, the linear equation Eq. [38] is solved by QMR but not to a high degree of accuracy. In practice, the QMR recursion is terminated once a prespecified (and relatively large) tolerance is reached. Consequently, the resulting Lanczos vectors are only approximately filtered. This inexact spectral transform is efficient because many less matrix-vector multiplications are needed, and its deficiencies can subsequently... [Pg.302]

Innovative methodologies for in vivo microdialysis in immature subjects have facilitated research in multiple areas. Clinically driven experimentation on neonatal anoxia, hypoxia, or ischemia indicates that perinatal manipulations of oxygen and blood flow result in acute and chronic disruptions of neurotransmission and transmitter turnover (Chen et al., 1997 Nakajima et al, 1999 Ogasawara et al., 1999). Recently, a role for toxic free radicals in brain damage induced by prenatal infection was also delineated by in vivo microdialysis in rat pups (Cambonie et al, 2000, 2004). More subtle neonatal manipulations, such as maternal separation or periodic neonatal isolation, coupled with subsequent in... [Pg.239]
