Use of multi-criteria decision-making procedure requests a new method for evaluation of the potential options of energy systems. Its purpose is mainly oriented to the evaluation of options in order to investigate the effect of individual criteria on the priority list for decision-making process. In the evaluation procedure it is possible to investigate effects of mutual relation of the criteria on the finale priority list. This evaluation procedure could be imagined as the useful tool for the analysis of the individual criteria. [Pg.208]

The final step in the decision making process should be the selection of risk management options. Once the different options are evaluated, a decision has to be made as to which options are selected and which rejected. This decision is obvious if one or more options turn out to be dominant (relatively better on all criteria). Otherwise, trade-offs have to be made that need legitimisation (Graham and Wiener 1995). A legitimate decision can be made on the basis of formal balancing tools (such as cost-benefit or multi-criteria-decision analysis), by the respective decision makers (given his decision is informed by a holistic view of the problem) or in conjunction with participatory procedures. [Pg.22]

Formal decision analysis methods, in particular Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis MCDA, see [960[ for an overview) such as Utility Analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process AHP), seek to formally assess the importance of several criteria and the grade to which the criteria are respected by different alternatives, to detect inconsistencies in the assessments, and finally to recommend the best fitting alternative. Several applications in the domain of chemical engineering are reported in the literature, including the design of urban wastewater treatment plants [672] and separation systems for hydrocarbons [621]. [Pg.154]

The very idea behind partial order is to compare objects and by doing this to learn from them. Hence, it is obvious that partial order may also be useful in decision support. Indeed partial orders play implicitly an important role in many established multi-criteria decision aid models. Being aware that there is important literature about this topic, the motto of the chapters presented here is to let speak the partial order alone - as far as possible. [Pg.220]
