Morphology examination

In a general way, the identification of asbestos fibers can be performed through morphological examination, together with specific analytical methods to obtain the mineral composition and/or stmcture. Morphological characterization in itself usually does not constitute a reHable identification criteria (1). Hence, microscopic examination methods and other analytical approaches are usually combined. 

Figure 12 shows the dependence of the average aspect ratio and the TLCP volume fraction on the relative sample thickness for the four processing conditions in the core layer, transition layer and skin layer, respectively, by a morphological examination [13]. Generally, the aspect ratio increases from core to skin layer, whereas the situation is reversed for the volume fraction. An average volume fraction about 20% can be clearly seen. 

A number of substances may interfere with stool examination. Particulate materials such as barium, antacids, kaolin, and bismuth compounds interfere with morphologic examination, and oily materials such as mineral oil create small, refractile droplets that make examination difficult. Antimicrobial agents, particularly broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents, may suppress amebae. If any of these substances have been used, specimens should not be submitted until the substances have been cleared (generally 5 to 10 days). A fecal specimen may appear satisfactory by gross examination when there is still barium, etc., which can interfere with microscopic examination.

Two types of samples were prepared for detailed morphological examination. Sections of the as-polymerized material were examined directly by WAXS and DSC. Samples also were prepared by casting films from a solution of the polymer in dimethyl formamide (DMF) at 52°C. Solvent was allowed to slowly evaporate, and the films were dried by annealing for 670 hr at 52°C, followed by slow cooling to room temperature. Thin films suitable for electron microscopy were cast from 0.5 wt % polymer in DMF onto clean glass slides, and after 20 hr of annealing at 52°C, floated off on distilled water and mounted on 300-mesh copper grids. 

Nevertheless, if such an approach is to be used, then all underpinning forensic science principles should also be followed. The packaging and the data contained thereon should be recorded in a careful manner. The packaging should be opened and the materials subjected to morphological examination. They should then be re-instated and signature-sealed as appropriate.

Epirubicin is considered to cause substantially less cardiotoxicity than doxorubicin on a molar basis (4,21). This has been attributed to its more rapid clearance rather than a different action (22). In a randomized, double-blind comparison of epirubicin and doxorubicin, there was a significant reduction in left ventricle ejection fraction with doxorubicin but not with epirubicin (23).
