Previously, we recorded UV absorption spectra of the same molecules in spread monolayers on the water surface and in 11-monolayer LB films on solid substrates as shown in Figure 11 [11]. The conductivity ofthe film was calculated for 30 monolayers. The film was deposited onto a Ag microelectrode array with a 1-mm distance between fingers. The thickness ofthe monolayer was taken to be 2 x 10"7 cm. For an air humidity value of 60% the conductivity equals 1.3 x 10"6 (Q/cm)-1 The current through the film has an ionic character, and there is apparently layered solid electrolyte... [Pg.103]

To prepare ultrathin polymer films on the surface of wafers, especially those of large diameter (6 or 8 inch), uniformity and defect density become important factors in determining the resist quality. The conventional spin coating method has been reported to introduce interference striations (11) and high defect densities (2.31 when used to prepare ultrathin polymer films. As an alternative approach, the LB technique has been proposed as being suited to the preparation of more uniform ultrathin polymer films (2). Using this technique monolayer polymer films can be transferred layer by layer to the surface of a solid substrate from the water surface. An important feature of the LB technique is that the accumulation of monolayer films allows the thickness of the built-up film to be controlled in a precise manner. Consequently, extremely uniform and ultrathin polymer films can be prepared. [Pg.350]

This section will demonstrate the first sergeants and soldiers-type helix command surface experiment, in which thermo-driven chiroptical transfer and amplification in optically inactive polysilane film from grafted (or spin-coated) optically active helical polysilane onto quartz substrate [92]. Although helix and optical activity amplification phenomena based on the sergeants and soldiers principle was mainly investigated in polymer stereochemistry, the orientation and physical properties of a thick layer deposited onto a solid surface and controlled by a monolayer command film based on command surface principles was established in photochemical material and surface science [93,94]. Both sergeants and soldiers and command surface experiments appear to have been developed independently. [Pg.168]

The simulation studies of melting in adsorbed monolayers is still under way the melting mechanism of N2 in submonolayer films has been ascribed to the thermally activated formation of vacancies that form near the edges of a patch and migrate inward [39] and simulations of the normal modes of the commensurate monolayer solid [40] show an absence of very long wave-length vibrations parallel to the surface which is produced by the adsorption in the weak wells of the periodic gas-solid potential. [Pg.603]

The chemical structures of the lipid studied are shown in the Fig. 1. There are two different types of behavior for monolayers from those lipid mixtures (i) solid film formation with relatively low pressure of a collapse (cholesterol rich monolayers) and (ii) viscous elastic film formation, when the concentration of CHL is less 30% in the monolayer. The character of the behavior of a monolayer is quite similar upon replacing of CHL by Q3P, though the LB film morphology is essentially different. [Pg.350]

The formation of a solid film with circular-like close packed domains is a prominent feature of Q3P monomolecular film (Fig. 2a). As opposite, prior to adding of the Q3P, a DPPC monolayer possess a molecularly smooth surface being transferred at the same surface pressure by HP method. [Pg.350]
