Intercalated molecules

Systems that react in this manner fall into two classes. In the first of these the framework that dominates the crystal structure scarcely participates in the reaction. This is the case, for example, in the reaction of an organic molecule intercalated in graphite or a clay, or of a guest molecule held in a clathrate of urea or thiourea. Some cases of this sort will be treated in the next section.

Partial bromination of (SN) with bromine vapour yields the blue-back polymer (SNBro.4)x, which has a room temperature conductivity higher than that of (SN) c- The bromine is present as tribromide (Brs ) anions and Br2 molecules intercalated between partially oxidised polymer chains. 

Recently, Sato and Hatano 67 69) found a new type of chiral lyotropic mesophase composed of Tween 80, sorbitan mono-9-octadecenoate poly(oxy-l,2-ethanediyl), and water, and discussed the ICD of achiral solute molecules intercalated into the lyotropic mesophase. As the concentration of Tween 80 is increased, three distinct phases are obtained micelle, neat phase, and reversed micelle, in that order. Geometric factors play a role in the catalytic processes on clays. Smectites, for example, consist of regular, parallel sheets. The size and swelling properties of the interlayer space determine the size and shape of the molecules intercalating between the layers, which will have an effect on the selectivity of the reaction.

The anticancer activity of daunomycin (34) (O Scheme 14) is attributed to the intercalation of the drug with DNA. This pattern of effect is common to all anthracyclines [46]. Two daunomycin molecules intercalate at each of the two C G sites at either site of the duplex d(CGTACG). This binding results in an increase in base pair-separation from 3.4 to 6.8 A as the molecule associates, which in turn leads to an unwinding of the helix and the formation of a noncovalent complex with the DNA. This results in the inhibition of DNA replication and RNA transcription [47].

An alternative approach for utilizing DNA thin films for electrochemical sensors involves using redox-active probe molecules intercalated into the Ji-stack. Fig 5-lb. This approach has been successfully employed in the design of electrochemical assays for hybridization,single-base mismatches, and chemical modifications and lesions within duplex DNA. MD simulations of ionophore/channel molecules intercalated into a lipid bilayer would require a large number of lipid molecules to ensure that the ionophore/channel molecule does not interact with its periodic images.
