RIM is increasing in importance and emphasizes the production of thermoset PUs. Here, liquid monomers are mixed together under high pressure prior to injecting into the mold. Polymerization occurs within the mold. Most automotive dash panels are RIM-produced. Notice the tough surface and semiflexible underbelly of the dash. The amount of foam formation is controlled to give the finished product. [Pg.112]

A liquid preparation with solid polystyrene (0.6 g) dissolved in liquid styrene monomer (1.5 mL) was cast against a mold. Polymerization was accomplished with UV irradiation (21°C, 18 h). Solid PS was included to reduce the degree of shrinkage that occurred when monomeric styrene was photopolymerized [85]. In a similar manner, PMMA dissolved in MMA was cast against a Si master. Spme and runners should be as small as possible to avoid rework of the polymeric material. The entrance diameter of the sprue should be larger in diameter than the nozzle diameter. Effect of Pressure Pressure is one of the physical factors that often influences the glass transition, since polymeric products are frequently prepared by injection molding. Here, the skin-core effect needs to be mentioned that is, a thin surface layer of an injection-molded polymeric product solidified at a temperature different from that of the bulk. If the sample sohdi-fied at an elevated pressure, endothermic peaks would appear at the low-temperature side of the glass transition curve. These peaks shift to lower temperatures with increasing pressure. The DSC curves get rather complex, but little quantitative information can be extracted besides the fact that the sample was cooled under high pressure. [Pg.76]
