In watersheds where surface runoff is limited by infiltration rate rather than soil-water storage capacity, areas of the watershed can alternate between sources and sinks of surface flow. This again will be a function of soil properties, rainfall intensity and duration, and antecedent moisture condition. As surface runoff is the main mechanism by which phosphorus is exported from most watersheds, it is clear that, if surface runoff does not occur, phosphorus export can be small. Thus, consideration of hydro-logic pathways and variable source areas is critical to a more detailed understanding of phosphorus export from agricultural watersheds. [Pg.250]

The biomass is fed overbed through multiple feed chutes using air jets to help distribute the fuel over the surface of the bed. Variable-speed screw conveyors are usually used to meter the fuel feed rate and control steam output. Feedstocks such as bark and waste wood are chipped to a top size of 25 mm (1 in) to ensure complete combustion. The bed usually consists of sand around 1 m (3 ft) deep. This serves to retain the fuel in the furnace, extending its in-furnace residence time and increasing combustion efficiency. It also provides a heat sink to help maintain bed temperature during periods of fluctuating fuel moisture content. [Pg.39]

Two bituminous coals of moderate ash content were chosen for this paper to illustrate this method of determining coal-mineral association. The first sample was an Upper Freeport coal with 1.3% moisture, 9.88% ash, and 1.56% total sulfur. The second sample was an Indiana No. 3 coal having 10.5% moisture, 7.35% ash, and 4.26% total sulfur. Both coals had been precleaned at a coarse particle size, ground to minus 325 mesh (44 ym), and then separate samples were cleaned by float-sink and by froth flotation techniques, as described elsewhere [5]. Analyses of the feed coals are included in Table I. [Pg.33]

Zinc and lead usually occur together in nature as sulfides. Earlier separation processes involved the fine grinding of the combined sulfides and then treating the particles with chemical reagents to cause one sulfide to be preferentially wetted and rhns the two sulfides separated by the froth flotation process. In a first stage, the lead sulfide is floated while the zinc sulfide sinks to the bottom of the tank. In the second stage, the process is reversed and the zinc sulfide is floated. Gangue and other nonmetals collect at the bottom of the tank. The separated sulfides are dewatered to a 6-7% moisture content and are referred to as the zinc concentrate and the lead concentrate. [Pg.1774]

Determination of the washability characteristics of coal by the float and sink (float-sink) method can be applied to coal of any particle size provided suitably large vessels to hold the larger lumps are available. Air-dried coal, not dry coal, should be used since the separation depends partly on the difference in specific gravity of the clean coal and dirt particles, and the specific gravity, in turn, is dependent on the moisture content of the coal. If the coal is dried before the test is carried out, the conditions will then differ from those in commercial washers, and the results will be at variance with those obtained in practice. [Pg.37]
