Modified hot wire

A comparison of guarded hot plate, transient plane source and modified hot wire methods has been made54 using polyurethane foam, and the strengths and weaknesses of the techniques discussed,... [Pg.282]

The hot-wire anemometer can be modified for hquid measurements, although difficulties are encountered because of bubbles and dirt adhering to the wire. See Stevens, Borden, and Strausser, David Taylor Model Basin Rep. 953, December 1956 Middlebrook and Piret, Ind. Eng. Chem., 42, 1511-1513 (1950) and Piret et al., Ind. Eng. Chem., 39, 1098-1103 (1947). [Pg.888]

A number of variations of the transient hot-wire method have been devised, and an optical method to detect the temperature rise has been used. A modified transient hot-wire technique using a mercury-incapillary probe was introduced by Nagashima et al., in which a thin mercury thread was used as a heater-thermometer and the capillary wall as an insulator. Using this method, they measured the thermal conductivity in mixture systems such as (Na, K)N03, (Li, Na)N03, and HTS(KN03-NaN03-NaN02, 44-7-49 mol.%). ... [Pg.185]

One source of error in methods in which the liquid is in contact with metal plates at fixed temperatures is the discontinuity of temperature at the solid-liquid interface. The Schleiermacher hot-wire method ( 4.VIIG) has been used by several experimenters but its reliability is not beyond question, and a continuous flow method devised by Graetz, in which the liquid flows through a metal tube in a mantle at constant temperature, and the inlet and outlet temperatures in the tube are measured, has also been modified.5... [Pg.130]

Boron, silicon carbide, diamond and other materials can be deposited by chemical vapor deposition on the surface of hot wires or hot fibers. If a minimal vapor deposit is applied, the process will modify only the surface of the fiber and produce a coating, while leaving its core functionality unchanged. If, however, a thick vapor deposit is applied, the process will create a new and very large diameter fiber that has the functionality of the sheath and a sacrificial core. [Pg.21]

The measuring technique utilizing an animated Excel sheet was an important step in the development of hot-wire electrochemical methods. Later, the system has been substituted by a combination of a home-built heating device with a commercial, freely programmable potentiostat. Till now, it is not determined yet which variant will predominate either a dedicated instrument or a modified commercial device. Meanwhile, microcontroller boards became widespread and are easily available. Modem boards are much better programmable than the example presented here. The well-known Arduino due mentioned further above is an example only. It is equipped with ADC, DAC and UART, and it can be programmed... [Pg.134]

Parallel hot wire method (BS EN 993-15 1998 and ISO 8894-2)— To extend the range of conductivites measured, the parallel hot wire method was devised. In this method, as its name suggests, the heater and thermocouple wires are arranged in parallel. This modified arrangement allows thermal conductivities up to 25 W/mk to be measured. [Pg.457]

For tooling of molten Vitreosil inch Nichrome wire may be employed though if much tooling is required, then carbon rods or plates are necessary. In general, most of the operations described in earlier chapters can be modified for working with Vitreosil and, if a sufficiently hot flame is available, less manipulative skill is usually necessary because the material stays fairly viscous. [Pg.187]

The basic construction has been modified in addnl patents. One change added a refractory bead to the top of the wire (inside the lamp) to prevent burn thru and to disperse the hot particles of initiating material. Addnl patents covering the initiation of the Magi cube are 3535064, 3540819, 3540820, 3597603, 3597604, 3602618, 3625641, 3667992, 3699021, 3700377, 3730669, 3734679 Refs Public Affairs Dept, SyIvania Electric Products Inc, 730 Third Ave, New York NY 10017 2) G. The sampling-boat technique is frequently hampered by poor precision. Delves (D5) described an improved system. He modified the system of White (W5) who used a platinum-wire loop in conjunction with an absorption tube to increase sensitivity. Delves vaporized samples from microcrucibles made of nickel foil into a nickel absorption tube situated in air-acetylene flame. The sensitivity is 1 X g lead per 1% absorption at the 2833 A line. Only 10 /lil of whole blood are required. Before analysis, the sample is dried in the nickel crucible on a hot plate at 140°C (ca. 30 seconds) and then is partially oxidized with 20 jal of 30% hydrogen peroxide at 140°C until a dry yellow residue is obtained. Standards of lead added to normal blood are run in a similar fashion. [Pg.307]

Principal styrenic TPE markets are molded shoe soles and other footwear extruded film/sheet and wire/cable covering and pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) and hot-melt adhesives, viscosity index (VI) improver additives in lube oils, resin modifiers, and asphalt modifiers. They are also popular as grips (bike handles), kitchen utensils, clear medical products, and personal care products. - Adhesives and sealants are the largest single market. Styrenic TPEs are useful in adhesive compositions in web coatings. ... [Pg.192]

C -l,4-polyisoprenes are produced by depolymerizing polyisoprene or natural rubber. The material is used as a reactive plasticizer for adhesive tape, abrasive and friction products such as grinding wheels, and automobile brake linings, wire and cable sealants, and hot melt adhesives. The natural rubber product serves as a base for cold molding compounds for arts and crafts, asphalt modifier, as potting, or in molds. [Pg.132]

Samples are taken from the melt and analyzed, and the chemical composition of the steel can, if necessary, be modified by the addition of alloying metals in the converter or in the ladle afterwards. Later, the desired molten metal is either cast into ingots or continually cast into a slab or billet form. Then the material is hot-rolled or forged into its final form. Some material receives cold rolling to further reduce the thickness as in sheets or drawn into smaller diameters as in rods and wire. Most stainless steels receive a final annealing and acid pickling in order to remove furnace scale from annealing, and they help to promote the passive surface film that naturally occurs. [Pg.108]
