Mobile weapon systems

Mobile weapon systems include the ordnance weapon systems, such as the air-to-air, air-to-surface, surface-to-air, and short-range, surface-to-surface missile. Because of the limited volume requirements, heavy emphasis is placed on density impulse. These systems are completely prepackaged (including propellants) and require complete storability of the propellant as a liquid over a temperature range — 65°-160°F. Because of personnel proximity at all times, toxicity is sometimes an important factor. The large number of units which are utilized usually imposes restrictions on propellant cost. 

In mid-1959 the Minister of Defence, Sandys, on the advice of his permanent secretary, Powell, established an independent British Nuclear Deterrent Smdy Group, with representatives of the three services, the Foreign Office and the Treasury, under Powell s chairmanship. The group compared Blue Streak with two American ballistic missiles, the submarine-launched Polaris and the air-launched Skybolt. Rising estimates for the costs of research and development and of underground silos hardened the Treasury s opposition to Blue Streak, and the Chiefs of Staff were in favour of a mobile system. Once President Eisenhower had indicated to Macmillan in March 1960 that Skybolt would be available on satisfactory terms, the Defence Committee took the decision to cancel Blue Streak as a weapons system. The vulnerable Thors were taken out of service by the end of 1963. 

Tanks are most important weapon systems for land battles and their performance is decided in terms of fire power, mobility and protection. In order to provide protection to tanks in the battlefield, add-on explosive reactive armor (ERA) has been developed in several countries including India. ERA consists of an explosive layer sandwiched between two plates which are enclosed in metallic containers and fitted on tanks. Such ERAs are reported to provide protection to tanks against HEAT and HESH warheads, hand held anti-tank (A/T) weapons and to some extent against tandem warheads.

Unprecedented destruction was an inevitable result of this new war of materiel. By the end of November 1914, the war had seen the end of pre-war sttategic assumptions based on men and mobility. The Western Front had become a warren of trenches and obstacles, with armies reduced to deadlock and stalemate. Innovations in weapons were driven by tactical necessities. New weapons systems dominated the terrain. Above all, there was the artillery, as Strachan has put it, In the First World War, the artillery was the agent of industrial and social mobilization . The major use, however, more than 60% of the total consumption, of tantalum is very special. The metal is very widely used for electronic components, mainly capacitors. The dielectric necessary for a capacitor is simply the passive layer. Applications for this type of capacitor are mobile telephones and other communication systems and instruments for controlling ships, aircraft, missiles and weapons systems. Tantalum is also used for rectifiers in low-voltage systems such as railway-signal systems. 

The post-WWII era saw a continuation of the establishment of permanent military installations throughout the U.S. in order to support the increasing size of the Armed Forces. This growth responded to the need to train and test with long-range weapons systems and missiles, and to provide increased mobility for armored vehicles and massed formations of troops. The system of weapon systems maintenance requires usage of technical resources, which differ significantly from the ones commonly used in other fields of economy. Technical potential of maintenance system under combat operations is based on four main elements recovery vehicles, mobile workshops with universal equipment, specialist tools sets and spare parts kits (Smal Smola, 2011).

Demand for microwave dielectric ceramics used in telecommunications, as well as in cable communications using optical fibers, is increasing rapidly. Whereas, in the past microwave communications were used primarily for military purposes such as radar, weapon guidance systems and satellite communications, more recently microwaves have been utilized extensively in communications devices such as mobile radios and phones, and in satellite broadcasting (see Chapter 8). Today, mobile warfare, with air support and more powerful and accurate conventional weapons, has made this motive for using gas all but obsolete. No system of trenches could withstand the attack of a modern army, and indeed no modern army would think of placing itself in fixed entrenchments. So what then is the appeal of CBW to the modern warrior ...
