Social mobility

Within the consumer value chain, power will continue to shift to the shopper. Shopping anytime and anywhere is becoming a new reality. The convergence of mobility, social, and e-commerce technologies will redefine the moments of truth. [Pg.269]

The human element is not one third of sustainability it is central to its implementation (Pearson 2003). The challenge of sustainability is neither wholly technical nor rational. It is one of the change in attitude and behavior. Sustainability therefore must include the social discourse where the fundamental issues are explored collaboratively within the groups or community concerned. We do not do that very well, partly because of increasing populations, complexity, distractions, and mobility, but more because of certain characteristics of the dominant paradigm that are seen as desirable (Flicker 2001). [Pg.22]

Race politics can only proceed from a racialized sense of the social order—an understanding that this or that race shall work toward this or that aim. In this sense the nation s first naturalization law, in 1790, represented race politics par excellence, as did its drastic revision in 1924. The former proceeded from an assumption that only white persons were truly fit for the rigors of republican self-government the latter, from a revised estimation that, whoops, only Nordics were fit after all. But race politics itself also holds the power to generate a racial order of its own the political mobilization of individuals and groups around a racially posed question can itself exert influence upon existing patterns of race-consciousness and racial salience. [Pg.270]

Feelings of isolation were common among interviewees at both historically black colleges and universities and historically white colleges and universities. In instances where the chemists were the only persons of color in the department or perhaps the first ones ever appointed to a faculty position in chemistry, many became discouraged and sometimes very depressed. Benjamin (1991) posits that the social isolation faced by many upwardly mobile African Americans often leads to stress, which can manifest itself in physiological disorders, such as hypertension, behavioral disorders, and even suicide. One Cohort V interviewee offered the following comments ... [Pg.98]

Many retirees are so enthusiastic about retirement centers, they have closed their eyes to other possibilities. Retirement centers can come in all sizes, varieties, and prices. Many have medical centers. Large ones often have churches, organized social activities, golf, swimming, and tennis. Compared to adult condominiums and mobile-home parks, retirement centers are more self contained. [Pg.291]
