The enhanced concentration at the surface accounts, in part, for the catalytic activity shown by many solid surfaces, and it is also the basis of the application of adsorbents for low pressure storage of permanent gases such as methane. However, most of the important applications of adsorption depend on the selectivity, ie, the difference in the affinity of the surface for different components. As a result of this selectivity, adsorption offers, at least in principle, a relatively straightforward means of purification (removal of an undesirable trace component from a fluid mixture) and a potentially useflil means of bulk separation. [Pg.251]

SpiralTlevator Materials are moved upward by the centrally located spiral-type conveyor in a cylindrical or cone-shaped Nautamix vessel (Fig. 37c and d). Blending occurs by the downward movement at the outer walls of the vessel. The vessel serves the dual purposes of blending and storage. In these mixers the screw impeller actively agitates only a small portion of the mixture and natural circulation is used to ensure all the mixture passes through the impeller zone. The role of the Pt-Ba interaction in the mechanism of adsorption of NO species was also studied by a kinetic model reported in the literature [16]. The model, which consists of 10 elementary reversible steps, is based on the oxidation of NO to N02 over Pt and on the storage of N02 over Ba, and it was used to simulate the data collected over both the physical mixture and the ternary Pt-Ba/y-Al203 1/20/100 w/w sample. Worker safety studies are not likely to normally include a control substance (i.e., a material used in the study to serve as basis of comparison with the test substance). However, if a control substance is included as a treatment group, then it must (1) be fully characterized as to its identity, purity (or strength), and stability (and solubility, if appropriate) (2) be appropriately tested in mixtures with any carrier used and (3) meet all the other GLP recordkeeping, labeling, and storage requirements, as specified for the test substance.
