Avermectins and Ivermectin. The avermectias are pentacycHc lactones isolated from fermentation products of Streptomjces avermitilis and ivermectin is a semisynthetic chemical, 22,23-dihydroavermectia (46). Ivermectin is effective in very low doses for the control of red spider mites on deciduous fmits, in baits for the control of imported fire ants, and as a parasiticide for Onchocerca volvulus in humans and for catde gmbs. These insecticides appear to function as agonists for the neuroinhibitory transmitter y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (see Antiparasitic agents, avermectins). [Pg.297]

The tropomyosins of mite and insect species show some sequence identity (63-65%) with snail tropomyosin and share similar epitopes (EFSA, 2006 Fig. 4.1). Still, tropomyosin appears to play a minor role in the crossreactivity of dust mites and snails (Asturias et ah, 2002 Guilloux et ah, 1998 Van Ree et ah, 1996a). Other non-tropomyosin allergens are likely to be involved including Der p 4 (amylase), Der p 5, Der p 7, and hemocyanin (Martins et ah, 2005 Mistrello et ah, 1992 Van Ree et ah, 1996). While snail is the main molluscan shellfish species involved in cross-reactions with dust mites, some patients allergic to dust mites and snails are also sensitized to mussels (DeMaat-Bleeker et ah, 1995 Van Ree et ah, 1996b). In their study of 70 patients sensitized to molluscan shellfish, Wu and Williams (2004) noted that 90% were also sensitized to dust mites. However, the clinical significance of this sensitization was not documented. [Pg.167]

Several species of mites (order Acarina) are effectively controlled by oil sprays. The European red mite, a major pest of fruit in the northeastern United Stat, is a member of this group. This pest appears to have become more severe as a result of the general use of DDT. Such a situation is explained by the fact that mites are not controlled by DDT, while certain parasites and predators of mites are killed by it. The continued use of DDT under these circumstances favors the build-up of mites. [Pg.4]

The properties and characteristics available for paraffinic fraction 5 appear to be in line with those of the other fractions of the paraffinic series and do not infficate an explanation for a difference in performance against adult California red scale. A similar deviation did not occur in the case of the correlations established for eggs of the citrus red mite. Since the work of Ebeling (7) indicated that contact of oil with the scale insect is generally accomplished by penetration of the oil imder the scale armor, the spreading ability of the oil film appears to be an important factor in the efficiency of an oil against adult California red scale. [Pg.33]

A pioneering study by Baker and Krantz (1984) demonstrated the use of an alarm pheromone for R. robini (identified at the time as neral (2) plus geranial (6)) in combination with acaricides for mite control. The results appeared promising in principle, but in practice, use of mite alarm pheromones for control of pests infesting stored products may not be feasible because of the strong and often offensive odors and flavors of the compounds. [Pg.92]

The L. carinii model is routinely used for primary screening and provides a reliable indication of the in vivo action of a compound. It was first used by Culbertson and Rose [18] for antifilarial screening. This parasitic infection is generally transmitted [ 19-21 ] in 3 weeks by the rat mites Liponsyssus bacoti and requires 8 more weeks to mature in the next animal until microfilariae appear in the blood. The adult filarial worms are found in the pleural cavity. [Pg.235]

Nontarget Effects. The shift from sulfur dusting to Bayleton spraying in California appears to be associated with an increase in predatory mite populations, which were uncommon in vineyards on sulfur programs (personal communication). On the other hand, pestiferous Erineum mites and thrips appear to increase where sulfur usage has been reduced, although a clear cause and effect relationship has not been established. [Pg.151]

Uses Dichlorvos is a colorless to amber liquid with a mild chemical odor. The USEPA has classified it under RUP, and hence it should be purchased and used only by certified applicators. Dichlorvos is used primarily to control household insects such as flies, aphids, spider mites, caterpillars, and thrips. The chemical also is used therapeutically against parasitic worm infections in dogs, livestock, and humans. The mechanism of action appears to be a contact poison and stomach poison in insects caused by interference with cholinesterase, a neurologic enzyme that is important to nerve transmissions. It is used as a fumigant and has been used to make pet collars and pest strips. It is available as an aerosol and a soluble concentrate.28 44... [Pg.135]
