Middle managers initiatives

Potential mentors are selected from the ranks of female junior and middle management. The mentees were initially those in upper management, but the scheme has been extended to include male managers at middle and junior management level with equally positive results. In the first instance mentoring participation was voluntary, but it is now expected that all eligible male senior level and female junior level managers will take part. 

He could have initiated a visionary-sounding corporate initiative he could have written memos to senior leaders asking for endorsement he could have paid expensive consultants and he could have waited for someone to make it an official corporate policy. He did none of those things - in a textbook case of leading as a middle manager, he instead orchestrated the conditions... 

In Britain, competence is being used as a basis for assessing Junior and middle managers towards a National (or Scottish) Vocational Qualification (NVQ or SVQ), Standards for assessing competence have been defined by the MCI (Management Charter Initiative), a body that has established itself as the official specifier of standards for management education and development. Among their competence standards is a model of personal competence , shown in Box 2.4. 

The result of these attitudes is that a minimum commitment is made to the initiative until senior management show by conhnuous example that the initiative is here to stay. A significant new safety initiative is likely to require at least two years of operation to convince middle managers and supervisors and four years to convince employees that the initiative is seriously intended ... 

The major technical problem was the inability to define subsurface geohydrologic conditions with the initial data. Expertise in the area of geohydrology was clearly needed. A lack of specific analytical techniques precluded meaningful environmental and risk assessments. Cleanup efforts were complicated because poltiners are not regulated under RCRA but are regulated under state law. In the middle of the cleanup effort, the site became involved in Superfund activities, and to date this involvement has not been clarified. Project management has become very difficult because of the many players and laws involved. As a result, public confidence has been affected.

Top and middle Industry management would make contact with scientists who have the needed expertise to meet the goals of the problem to be solved. The university and Industry would jointly sponsor efforts for close communication between Industry and academic scientists on a local and regional basis through forums, symposia, or a specific industry(ies) day or week at the university. Industry should accept the leadership and Initiate contacts that will prove useful and mutually beneficial to both. 

The initial interview with the deputy CEO went fine, and my wife, Maureen, and I found him to be a charming person and someone really keen to make a difference in safety at the plant. We were flown to the Middle East for further interviews and to be introduced to the executive management. I was introduced to the CEO, and immediately he wanted to know my opinion on the behaviors that were the cause of the plant s accidents. I did not agree with him about behaviors being the sole cause of accidents and asked, What about the unsafe work environment at which he was quite taken aback. I thought I had already talked myself out of the job ... 

From the ophons described above, one should conclude that selecting spheres is an art form that requires considerable management judgment. It also depends on management priorities for business direction. It may also seem counter-intuitive to divide the supply chain. After all, SCM is an end-to-end concept. Can one really attack a part and leave other parts imtouched Many times, it will make sense to "eat the whole elephant" like the middle example above. But, practically, most supply chains in larger companies are complex and involve many operations. So focus on significant pieces may assure that the highest-priority efforts achieve implementation. Our next section describes a way to divide the implementation effort into initiatives.
