Monocrotaline (170) has been the subject of extensive metabolic study with mammalian and microbiological systems. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids such as monocrotaline require metabolic activation to the corresponding pyrrole derivatives or dehydro alkaloids before they are capable of forming covalent bonds with critical macromolecules within the cell. The X-ray structure of dehydromonocrotaline has recently been determined (226), and the ability of dihydroretronicine derived from monocrotaline to react with deoxyguanosine has been demonstrated in vitro (225). [Pg.398]

Wet oxidation of dairy waste is one of the most difficult tasks that microorganisms are required to do. The microbiological system must oxidize the carbon and hydrogen of organic compounds to carbon dioxide and water, respectively, and must at the same time conserve its own mass. In other words, the cellular mass must neither increase nor decrease over long periods. That this ultimate objective is closely approached in practice testifies to the remarkable power of the metabolic capacity of microorganisms. [Pg.716]

Hydroxyquinoline (oxine, 6), one of the earliest analytical reagents, also is one of the most widely studied N—O bidentates. Its early coordination chemistry was reviewed by Phillips.19 Its use as an in vivo agent in microbiological systems has been reviewed by Schulman and Dwyer.20 The extensive use of oxine and substituted forms, and closely related bidentates, for the analytical solvent extraction and colorimeteric determination of metal ions has been comprehensively reviewed.21 An unusual bridged bonding mode for oxine has been reported in which N monodentate and O... [Pg.795]

It has long been known that, under appropriate conditions and especially in the liquid phase, synergistic associations can develop between microbiological systems and activated carbons or other support media (e.g.. in trickling bed filters for aerobic water treatment). In liquid phase applications, bacterial colonization of activated carbon can occur quite readily [76-79]. For example, the adsorptive capacities of activated carbon beds used in water treatment are often greatly enhanced by the presence of microorganisms, and the useful filter life is extended beyond that expected for a process of purely physical adsorption. Essentially, the... [Pg.37]

The choice of biocides from this list will depend on the application, e.g. cooling water or paper making or other industries using water, to combat the particular microbiological system. [Pg.326]

This book is the first in a projected series of multi-author books concerned with the engineering aspects of biotechnology. It is intended to serve the established professional and also to encourage students to take up careers in this field. The mathematical analysis of microbiological systems and bioprocesses will be given prominence in this series. The first volume deals with some hitherto neglected areas the dynamics of fermentation fluids, enzyme applications, internal regulation of metabolic... [Pg.198]

Interfacial surface structure and interaction of materials at the nanoscale have attracted much attention in the field of nanotechnology (Drexler 1992). Microbiological systems have been investigated as a microscale process (Zhao et al. 1998) however, recent studies showing the unique interaction of biological systems with entirely synthetie molecular assemblies have prompted... [Pg.285]
