Condensation of the TV-substituted p-aminocrotonic acid ester 15 with p-benzoquinone (4) has been successfully carried out to furnish the 5-hydroxyindole 29 when the substituent R on the nitrogen of the aminocrotonic acid ester was methyl, ethyl, -propyl, isopropyl, or -butyl, -hexyl, p-cyanoethyl, p-hydroxyethyl, carbethoxymethyl, benzyl, phenyl, o-tolyl, dimethylaminopropyl, y-hydroxypropyl etc ... [Pg.148]

There exist three isomers of phenyl-propyl alcohol, all of which have been prepared and described, and, although not yet introduced into commerce, may eventually be so. These are as follows Benzyl-methyl-carbinol, CgHj. CHj. CH(OH)CHg, boiling at 215° phenyl-ethyl-carbinol, CgHg. CH(OH)CH2. CHg, boiling at 221° and benzyl-dimethyl-carbinol, C Hg. C(OH)(CHg)2, melting at 21° and boiling at 225°. [Pg.128]

Methyl m-tolyl (8), ethyl m-tolyl, methyl n-butyl and methyl n-propyl sulfoxides were obtained in 100% e.e. This method was less successful when applied to methyl phenyl sulfoxide (5% e.e.) or to methyl isobutyl and methyl ethyl sulfoxides (25% e.e.). No complexes were formed between methyl o-tolyl, methyl p-tolyl, methyl 2-butyl and methyl isopropyl sulfoxides so these compounds could not be resolved using 7. A crystal structure of the 1 1 complex formed between 7 and 8 revealed that the partners were linked by OH—OS hydrogen bonds in endless zig-zag chains23. More recently, 2-chloroethyl m-tolyl sulfoxide (9) has been resolved using 724. [Pg.58]

A new approach to the resolution of sulphoxides 242 was recently reported by T oda and coworkers282. It takes advantage of the fact that some sulphoxides form crystalline complexes with optically active 2,2 -dihydroxy-l, 1-binaphthyl 243. When a two-molar excess of racemic sulphoxide 242 was mixed with one enantiomeric form of binaphthyl 243 in benzene-hexane and kept at room temperature for 12 h, a 1 1 complex enriched strongly in one sulphoxide enantiomer was obtained. Its recrystallization from benzene followed by chromatography on silica gel using benzene-ethyl acetate as eluent gave optically pure sulphoxide. However, methyl phenyl sulphoxide was poorly resolved by this procedure and methyl o-tolyl, methyl p-tolyl, s-butyl methyl and i-propyl methyl sulphoxides did not form complexes with 243. [Pg.288]
