Inorganic Compounds. Inorganic selenium compounds are similar to those of sulfur and tellurium. The most important inorganic compounds are the selenides, haUdes, oxides, and oxyacids. Selenium oxidation states are —2, 0, +1, +2, +4, and +6. Detailed descriptions of the compounds, techniques, and methods of preparation, and references to original work are available (1—3,5,6—10, 51—54). Until the late 1890s, coumarin was obtained commercially from only natural sources by extraction from tonka beans and deer tongue. Then synthetic methods of preparation and industrial manufacturing processes were discovered and developed starting principally from o-cresol, phenol, and sahcylaldehyde. The Annual Review of Biochemistry (Annual Review Inc. Patio Alto California) also is an excellent source of key references to the up-to-date information on known and new natural compounds, from small molecules, e.g. enzyme cofactors to proteins and nucleic acids. [Pg.504]
