The method of changing one variable at a time to investigate the outcome of an experiment probably dates back to the beginnings of systematic scientific research. The idea is fairly simple. We often need to investigate the influence of several factors. To simplify control and interpretation of the results, we choose to vary only one of the factors by keeping the rest of them at constant values. In the present work, the number of crosslinkable sites on each copolymer was fixed so different methods of changing the crosslink density were explored. Where "on-line" cleaning is considered to be necessary (see Chapter 15) either at installation or at a later date when the extent of a particular fouling problem has been established, the heat exchanger will of course, need to be designed with this in mind. Although the capital investment in such a system will be higher than the conventional method of changing velocity, its use could make a substantial reduction in operational and maintenance costs.
