Methylmercaptopropionaldehyde is also used to make the methionine hydroxy analog CH2SCH2CH2CH(OH)COOH [583-91 -5] which is used commercially as an effective source of methionine activity (71). AH commercial syntheses of methionine and methionine hydroxy analog are based on the use of acrolein as a raw material. More than 170,000 tons of this amino acid are produced yearly (30) (see Amino acids). Most of the bacteria, yeasts, molds, and higher fungi of interest for SCP production are deficient in methionine and must be supplemented with this amino acid to be suitable for animal feeding or human food appHcations. Also, lysine—arginine ratios should be adjusted in poultry rations in which yeast SCP is used (62). Human feeding studies have shown that only limited quantities of yeast such as Candida utilis can be added to food products without adverse effects on flavor (63). [Pg.468]

Table 11 presents data on the protein quaUty of a variety of LPC products obtained from rat-feeding studies. Typical protein efficiency ratio (PER) values for LPCs derived from alfalfa range from 1.41 without supplementation to 2.57 with 0.4% methionine added casein can be adjusted to a PER of 2.50 (98,100). Biological values (BV) of mixtures of LPCs, such as barley and rye grass or soybean and alfalfa, maybe higher than either LPC alone. Although molybdenum is an essential element, excess levels can have deleterious effects. The LD q and TLV values of the most common Mo compounds are Hsted in Table 3 (63,64). In general the toxicity of Mo compounds is considered to be low. For example, M0S2 has been found to be virtually nontoxic even at high levels. Certain Mo compounds such as MoCl and Mo(CO), have higher toxicity because of the chemical nature and reactivity of these compounds rather than the Mo content. Supplementary dietary Cu ", thiosulfate, methionine, and cysteine have been shown to be effective in alleviating Mo toxicity in animals. [Pg.476]

There appear also to be toxic effects. In animals, nitrous oxide has been shown to inactivate methionine synthetase which prevents the conversion of deoxyuridine to thymidine and thus has the potential for inducing megaloblastic anemia, leukopenia, and teratogenicity (44—46). Modulation of the phosphatidyl iaositol second-messenger system coupled to, for example, 5-HT,, 5-HT,3, or 5-HT2( receptors might also lead to novel antidepressants, as well as to alternatives to lithium for treatment of mania. Novel compounds such as inhibitors of A-adenosyl-methionine or central catechol-0-methyltransferase also warrant attention. [Pg.234]

Several years ago Makino et al. 86) studied the influence of anions on the conformation of poly-[L-methionine-S-methylsulfonium] salts in solution. They found that especially perchlorate will induce a-helix formation whereas Cl- and Br do not. Since then several authors 87 92) have found a similar a-helix inducing effect in the case of poly-L-lysine (Lys) and other BPAA at low pH-values where the polymer molecules usually attain an extended conformation due to the electrostatic repulsion of the ammonium groups. Despite our earlier failure in formate feeding experiments, [3- C]serine, [1,2- CJglycine, and [Me- C]methionine were found to enrich C-13 in neosaxitoxin effectively (7). The best incorporation was observed with methionine, indicating it is the direct precursor via S-adenosylmethionine. Glycine C-2 and serine C-3 must have been incorporated through tetrahydrofolate system as methyl donors in methionine biosynthesis. [Pg.23]

Only one study to date has been conducted on the treatment of acute pancreatitis with antioxidants. Clemens et al. (1991) were unable to show any difference in the incidence or severity of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis in a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of allopurinol. However, Salim (1991) performed a similar trial of the effect of allopurinol and DMSO in patients with pain from recurrent pancreatitis, and found significant benefit. On the basis that depletion of antioxidants is important in the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis, the administration of a cocktail of antioxidants was assessed for its effect on pain in this disease. Treatment with a combination of organic selenium, d-carotene, vitamins C and E, and methionine was of benefit in the initial pilot study, and in a placebo-controlled trial (San-dilands etal., 1990 Uden et al., 1990). [Pg.153]

Paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity can be prevented in animals with SOD, catalase and allopurinol (Kyle et al., 1987 Jaeschke, 1990 Tirmenstein and Nelson, 1990), and by N-acetyl-L-cysteine or methionine in humans (Meredith et al., 1986 Nelson, 1990). The protective efiect of allopurinol in mice only occurred at high concentrations, suggesting that its effect was related to scavenging of ROMs rather than inhibition of their production by XO (Jaeschke, 1990). [Pg.156]

Delta receptors are relatively selective for two related penta-peptides, methionine enkephalin and leucine enkephalin (met- and leu-enkephalin), which were isolated from porcine brain (Hughes 1975). Both met- and leu-enkephalin inhibit electrically induced contractions of guinea pig ileum, an effect that mimics those effects seen with opioid drugs, and is naloxone reversible.
