Commercial acetaldehyde has the following typical specifications assay, 99% min color, water-white acidity, 0.5% max (acetic acid) specific gravity, 0.790 at 20°C bp, 20.8°C at 101.3 kPa (1 atm). It is shipped in steel dmms and tank cars bearing the ICC red label. In the Hquid state, it is noncorrosive to most metals however, acetaldehyde oxidizes readily, particularly in the vapor state, to acetic acid. In some cases, particularly with iaactive metals, electrolytic cells are the primary method of manufacture of the fluoroborate solution. The manufacture of Sn, Pb, Cu, and Ni fluoroborates by electrolytic dissolution (87,88) is patented. A typical cell for continous production consists of a polyethylene-lined tank with tin anodes at the bottom and a mercury pool (ia a porous basket) cathode near the top (88). Pluoroboric acid is added to the cell and electrolysis is begun. As tin fluoroborate is generated, differences ia specific gravity cause the product to layer at the bottom of the cell. When the desired concentration is reached ia this layer, the heavy solution is drawn from the bottom and fresh HBP is added to the top of the cell continuously. The direct reaction of tin with HBP is slow but can be accelerated by passiag air or oxygen through the solution (89). The stannic fluoroborate is reduced by reaction with mossy tin under an iaert atmosphere. In earlier procedures, HBP reacted with hydrated stannous oxide. [Pg.168]

If antimony and arsenic are present ia the feed, copper and iron react to form the respective antimonides and arsenides known as speiss (specific gravity 6.0). If it is preferred to remove copper ia a speiss layer, the sulfur ia the siater must be reduced and the addition of scrap iron may be necessary to encourage speiss formation. Aluminum chlorohydrate is used in antiperspirants regulated by the U.S. Food and Dmg Administration (FDA). Solutions sold for FDA-approved use are colorless in appearance, have 23—24% Al as AI2O2, and low levels of iron (<50 ppm), sulfate (<0.025 %), metals (Ga, Mg, Na <10 ppm), and heavy metals (as Pb <10 ppm). The pH of these solutions at 25°G is about 3.8—4.0. Typically, solutions at 25°G have specific gravities from 1.33 to 1.35 and viscosities from 40 to 60 mPa-s(=cps). Aluminum chlorohydrate [12042-91 -0] is also available in dry form with different particle-size distributions. [Pg.179]

Strontium hydroxide, Sr(OH)2, resembles slaked lime but is more soluble in water (21.83 g per 100 g of water at 100°C). It is a white dehquescent sohd with a specific gravity of 3.62 and a melting point of 375°C. Strontium soaps are made by combining strontium hydroxide with soap stocks, eg, lard, tallow, or peanut oil. The strontium soaps are used to make strontium greases, which are lubricants that adhere to metallic surfaces at high loads and are water-resistant, chemically and physically stable, and resistant to thermal breakdown over a wide temperature range (11). [Pg.475]

Stannous Sulfate. Stannous sulfate (tin(Il) sulfate), mol wt 214.75, SnSO, is a white crystalline powder which decomposes above 360°C. Because of internal redox reactions and a residue of acid moisture, the commercial product tends to discolor and degrade at ca 60°C. It is soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid and in water (330 g/L at 25°C). The solubihty in sulfuric acid solutions decreases as the concentration of free sulfuric acid increases. Stannous sulfate can be prepared from the reaction of excess sulfuric acid (specific gravity 1.53) and granulated tin for several days at 100°C until the reaction has ceased. Stannous sulfate is extracted with water and the aqueous solution evaporates in vacuo. Methanol is used to remove excess acid. It is also prepared by reaction of stannous oxide and sulfuric acid and by the direct electrolysis of high grade tin metal in sulfuric acid solutions of moderate strength in cells with anion-exchange membranes (36). [Pg.66]

Titanium is a white metal and, when cold, is brittle and may be powdered. At a red heat it may be forged and drawn. The tensile strength of titanium is almost the same as that of steel, while its specific gravity (4.5) is almost two times less than that of steel. Hence, its specific strength (tensile strength/speciflc gravity) is 1000, which is considerably higher than that of 18/8 steel, which has a value of 700.
