A similar reaction route has been developed for reaction bonded mullite (RBM, aluminum silicate). In this case the powder formulation also includes a source of silicon (silicon metal, silicon carbide, or silica), in addition to aluminum metal and alumina, and the final product contains mullite as the major phase. The RBM process is frequently modified by additions of zircon (ZrSi04), which provide an additional source of silicon and result in a dispersion of fine zirconia particles in the product which restricts grain growth to ensure a fine uniform microstructure. It is again possible to reduce residual porosity while retaining the near-net-shape characteristics, but at the time of writing this process is still under development and some way from commercial exploitation. [Pg.293]

Chrome—nickel alloy heating elements that commonly ate used in low temperature furnaces are not suitable above the very low end of the range. Elements commonly used as resistors are either silicon carbide, carbon, or high temperature metals, eg, molybdenum and tungsten. In the drying of compound intermediates of refractory and reactive metals, particular attention is given to the environment and to the materials so that the compound does not pick up impurities during the process. A good example is the drying of zirconium hydroxide. After the solvent extraction separation from hafnium, which co-occurs with zirconium in the mineral zircon, the zirconium values are precipitated as zirconium hydroxide. Apart from the reactions described above for the formation of thin films of metals and compounds by the use of a solid source of the material, a very important industrial application of vapour phase transport involves the preparation of gas mixtures at room temperature which are then submitted to thermal decomposition in a high temperature furnace to produce a thin film at this temperature. Many of the molecular species and reactions which were considered earlier are used in this procedure, and so the conclusions which were drawn regarding choice and optimal performance apply again.
