The metal-packaging sector shares a similarity with the automotive OEM coatings sector in having both a small number of coating suppliers and end users. In Europe 90% of paint is supplied by five companies, while only four account for nearly 95% in the USA. The USA accounts for over 40% of the world s metal packaging coatings, which reflects the large US demand for B B containers. 

Can ends are stamped from sheets of precoated metal. These coatings need to be able to self heal after stamping and for this reason are usually solvent-based thermoplastic coatings. Production speeds for a typical B B line run into millions of units per day so application and cure times are measured in seconds with very hot ( 200°C) stoving temperatures. Most B B products are now of two-piece, as opposed to three-piece, design. The market for this type of container is more mature in the USA than in Europe. 

General line products include such disparate items as giftware, boxes, etc. With these relatively low volume products decoration is a more important element than anticorrosion protection. 

Environmental matters are again important in this sector but most attention is focused on the packaging

These containers usually consist of cylindrical bodies made of paperboard or fiber-board with metal or plastic ends, and are widely used for food packaging. Coated or laminated board may be used with aluminum foil to give good barrier properties. Such tubes or cans are used for some food products, while larger containers, as fiberboard drums, are used as alternatives to paper or plastic sacks or metal drums for other food products [5, 23, 24, 29-33].

This section of the metal packaging industry covers the manufacture of articles such as oil cans, paint cans, fancy boxes for chocolates or biscuits (i.e. usually no retorting or pasteurisation requirement and frequently no internal lacquer). The metal substrate is normally tinplate with TFS used to a lesser degree. A three coat external system is often used. This consists of a vinyl size coat, alkyd white coating and alkyd overprint varnish. 

Self-adhesive labels (and decals) are pieces of paper, plastic film or metal foil coated with pressure sensitive adhesives which adhere to any solid surfaces after removal from a release liner. They are typically used to convey various kinds of information -for example, product or package contents, barcodes, price stickers, insfructions, and technical data.
