The first commercial-scale anthrahydroquinone autoxidation process in the United States was put into operation by E. I. du Pont de Nemours Co., Inc. (Memphis, Tennessee) in 1953, followed by EMC Corporation (West Virginia), LaPorte Chemicals, Ltd. (U.K.), Degussa (Germany), Mitsubishi-Gas Chemical Co. (Japan), and others. 

Another potentially large user of I DE is the Tennessee Valley Authority. TVA is in the final year of a three-year test of I DE at its AHen station (Memphis, Tennessee). If this faciUty begins using I DE on a production basis, and if one or two other TVA faciUties join in, the potential market for scrap tires would be enormous, consuming some or all of the tires generated in several states. 

There are two U.S. producers of sodium perborate. E. I. du Pont de Nemours Co., Inc., in Memphis, Tennessee has converted part of their tetrahydrate capacity into monohydrate production (109). Interox has a monohydrate plant with a capacity of 20,000 t in Deer Park, Texas (109,110). 1991 U.S. consumption of sodium perborate was about 27,000 t, compared with about 45,000 t in the mid-1970s. 

Barium metaborate is used as an additive to impart fire-retardant and mil dew-resistant properties to latex paints, plastics, textiles, and paper products (6). Barium metaborate is marketed by Buckman Labs, Inc., Memphis, Tennessee (12). 

Miller et al. (18), using analyses for Akron, Ohio Lexington, Kentucky and Memphis, Tennessee, concluded that "summer daytime visibilities were significantly lower during the period 1966-69 than visibilities for the preceding 4-year period."...

Endrin is no longer manufactured in the United States. Velsicol Chemical Company, Memphis, Tennessee, was the producer of endrin until the final voluntary cancellation of registration with the Office of Pesticide Programs in 1991 (Bishop 1984, 1985, 1986 EPA 1983e USDA 1995). It is estimated that 2.3-4.5 million kg (5.1-9.9 million pounds) of endrin were sold in the United States in 1962, while less than 450,000 kg (990,000 pounds) were produced in 1971 (IARC 1974). More recent estimates of domestic production of endrin could not be found (HSDB 1995). As with many toxic chemicals, information on production or use of pesticides is often proprietary, and quantitative estimates of production of endrin are virtually impossible to obtain (Bason and Colbom 1992). Chemical manufacturers in the United States however, can legally produce pesticides for export that are currently banned or not registered for use in the United States (FASE 1996). No information on the production of endrin was available from the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) because endrin is not one of the chemicals that facilities are required to report (EPA 1995a).

An occupational mortality study conducted on a cohort of workers employed for at least 3 months between 1952 and 1979 at a Velsicol plant in Memphis, Tennessee, revealed no pattern of disease... 

Data concerning occupational exposure levels of heptachlor are very limited. An industrial hygiene survey conducted in 1977 at the Velsicol Chemical Corporation, Memphis, Tennessee, a plant that manufactured heptachlor, detected heptachlor in workplace air at levels ranging from 0.025 to 0.202 mg/m (1.64-13.2 ppb) (Netzel 1981). Data from the National Occupational Exposure Survey (NOES) conducted by NIOSH from 1981 to 1983 were not available for heptachlor or heptachlor epoxide.

This study was made at the Thomas A. Allen Steam Plant in Memphis, Tennessee, which has an 870 MW(e) peak capacity from three similar cyclone fed boilers. The plant is part of the TVA power system and was chosen because the Number 2 unit was being renovated. A new Lodge Cottrell electrostatic precipitator was being added so the TVA Power Production Division test sampling crew were available to help sample during compliance testing of the precipitator.
