Academy was provided by C.N.R. (the Italian National Research Council), M.U.R.S.T. (the Italian Ministry for University, Scientific Research and Technology) and the University of Rome III. Approximately 200 scientists attended the meeting, most of them Italians, but, with a sizeable international participation. Thirteen invited plenary lectures and six oral presentations were given, and fourteen posters were displayed. 

ASTM International s Committee D30 on Composites held a joint meeting with the MIL-17 Composite Materials Handbook committee in Charleston, S.C. in late October, 2003 hosting attendees fi om Germany, Canada, Israel, UK, France, and Spain to increase international participation in D30 standards development. D30 currently has members from 15 countries, plus non-member tech specialists firom eight more. D. V. Rosato during the early 1940s was involved in developing MIL-17 (and also MIL-23 on sandwich structures) and... 

Membership of EURACHEM is open to all EU/EFTA countries and the Commission of the European Communities. Other European countries may participate in EURACHEM as Associate Members and representatives of organizations. Eor example, AOAC International and the Federation of European Chemical Societies (EECS) can attend EURACHEM meetings as observers. All delegates to the EURACHEM Committee are eligible to voice their opinions and participate in projects of interest. 

The use of such natural hydrogen production machines in combination with the natural process of photosynthesis is the topic of an international NEDO project for the development of a semiartificial device for hydrogen production. On the occasion of the second meeting of all groups involved in this project, an international symposium on Biohydrogen was organized in Kyoto 2002. The state of the art of biohydrogen production from participants of this symposium is summarized in the chapters of this book. 

The non-EEC European countries have to make a financial contribution to the European Commission in respect of the COST 681 activity and this is a sure indication that they consider their involvement to be of value. Canada has the more informal status of an invited participant in same of the technical meetings. There are also links with relevant international organisations such as the FAO—as is evidenced by this joint Workshop. 

The idea for this book germinated from our eflforts to organize an international symposium of the same name in May of 2002 (meeting reviewed by E. M. Bradbury in Molecular Cell 10, 13-19, 2002). The excitement that meeting created in us and the participants indicated that we had hit a raw nerve in bringing a field to its structural roots.
