In 1833 an amylase from germinating barley was recovered and called diastase (1). Like malt itself, this product converted gelatinized starch into sugars, primarily maltose. Shordy thereafter, BerzeHus proclaimed the existence of non-living catalysts, and Schwaim (2) reported on his observation and purification of pepsin.

Mulching is a key technique in organic soil management but it is also an incredibly useful way of suppressing weeds. Varghese and coworkers have identified the active site nucleophiles of two crystalline ) -D-glucan endohydrolases from germinating barley [70]. In more recent work, Hej and coworkers were able to introduce 2,3-epoxypropyl- -laminaribioside 8 (n = 1) into the active site of the crystalline l,3-/3-D-glucanase from barley [71]. A subsequent X-ray crystallographic investigation gave invaluable information about the active site of this enzyme and the point of attachment between enzyme and inhibitor was confirmed.

An enzyme purified from rye grass capable of specifically hydrolyzing 3 -nucleotides has been available for some years (84)- The enzyme has also been purified (50-fold) from germinating rye seedlings (85) and seems quite specific for 3 -nucleotides. 3 -Deoxymononucleotides are not attacked (86) nor is arabinonucleoside 3, 5 -diphosphate (87). Enzymic activity increases 10-fold during germination (85). 

An enzyme similar to the 3 -nucleotidase of mung bean has been isolated from germinating wheat seedlings and purified 800-fold (90). The preparation possessed DNase, RNase, and 3 -nucleotidase activities. These three activities were similar in pH optima, requirements for Zn2+ and sulfhydryl compounds, stability to storage, temperature inactivation...

There are four major morphologic subtypes of this form of HL lymphocyte-rich cHL, nodular sclerosis HL, mixed cellularity HL, and lymphocyte-depleted HL. The tumor cells in cHL are mononuclear Hodgkin cells and multinucleated Reed-Sternberg cells (HRS). Similar to the neoplastic cells in NLPHL, the HRS cells have been found to be derived from germinal center B cells (K33, M9).
