The mechanism of thermal stabilization by polyurethane compound is probably based on the formylation reaction, where urethane linkage captures formaldehyde molecules which acts as a catalytic agent towards degradation reaction. [Pg.206]

Chemical stabilization involves removing the concentration of surface hydroxyls and surface defects, such as metastable three-membered rings, below a critical level so that the surface is not stressed by rehydroxylation in use. Thermal stabilization involves reducing the surface area sufficiently to enable the material to be used at a given temperature without reversible stmctural changes. The mechanisms of thermal and chemical stabilization are interrelated because of the extreme effects that surface hydroxyls and chemisorbed water have on stmctural changes. Full densification of gels, such as the... [Pg.255]

Mechanisms of thermal degradation of PVC, the structure of PVC and the stabilization of PVC have been the subject of many reviews. Those by Starnes,44 Endo45 and Ivan46 are some of the more recent. Defect structures in PVC arise during the propagation and chain transfer steps. As with PMMA, PVC formed by... [Pg.420]

Currently, there is a trend of low dielectric constant (low-k) interlevel dielectrics materials to replace Si02 for better mechanical character, thermal stability, and thermal conductivity [37,63,64]. The lower the k value is, the softer the material is, and therefore, there will be a big difference between the elastic modulus of metal and that of the low-k material. The dehiscence between the surfaces of copper and low-k material, the deformation and the rupture of copper wire will take place during CMP as shown in Fig. 28 [65]. [Pg.250]

Although hollow fibers are thought to be an excellent candidate to be used as support-they are cheap and have a very high surface area to volume (>1000 m m ) - very few reports on hollow-fiber-supported zeolite membranes exist in the open literature. For zeohte membranes, ceramic hollow fibers are preferred because of their mechanical and thermal stability. Recently, Alshebani... [Pg.229]

It should be noted that the above classification system of technetium cluster compounds is not the only possible one. In section 4 another classification is described, which is based on thermal stability and the mechanism of thermal decomposition. Section 2.2 is concerned with the classification based on methods of synthesizing cluster compounds. The classifications based on specific properties of clusters do not at all belittle the advantages of the basic structural classification they broaden the field of application of the latter, because for a better understanding and explanation of any chemical, physico-chemical and physical properties it is necessary to deal directly or indirectly with the molecular and/or electronic structures of the clusters. [Pg.193]

Heck C-C coupling reactions were also facilitated by the presence of a palladium catalyst when Pd was deposited on a tubular membrane of porous glass. Thus, the coupling of iodobenzene with allyl alcohol affording 3-phenylpropionaldehyde in the presence of this Pd catalyst had several advantages - the ease of catalyst manufacture, mechanical strength, thermal stability, and resistance to organic solvents [46],... [Pg.354]

Blends of sulfonated polymers and polymers containing basic moieties have also been made. Represented schematically in Figure 3.35, ionic cross-linking between acidic and basic sites generally leads to improved mechanical and thermal stabilities. strong interactions within these blends results... [Pg.162]

In situ synthesis of a compound or functional material on the surface of a support is usually used to prepare hybrid or composite materials. Not only are the properties of the adsorbate including mechanical performance, thermal stability, and degree of dispersion significantly enhanced by being supported or loaded on a surface by physical or chemical means, but the resulting hybrid or composite materials can also be expected to have the merits of both the compound itself and the support. [Pg.111]

We have seen that one of the key aspects of Fourier transform NIR analyzers is their control of frequency accuracy and long-term reproducibility of instrument line shape through the use of an internal optical reference, normally provided as a HeNe gas laser. Such lasers are reasonably compact, and have acceptable lifetimes of around 3 to 4 years before requiring replacement. However, we also saw how the reduction in overall interferometer dimensions can be one of the main drivers towards achieving the improved mechanical and thermal stability which allows FT-NIR devices to be deployed routinely and reliably in process applications. [Pg.133]

Qi et al. studied perovskite systems obtained by partially replacing La with Ce at the A-site of LaNi03 for ATR of gasoline and its subrogate n-octane with or without thiophene additive. They found similar activities and mechanical and thermal stabilities with both pellet and monolith Lao.8Ceo.2Ni03 [73]. [Pg.297]

The realization that tubules may be formed on temperature reduction of polymerized SUVs, prepared from polymerizable diacetylenic phosphatidylcholines (21 where n = 7-16 and m = 5-11), represented a major breakthrough in obtaining the desired supramolecular structure [355-360]. In the initial experiments, 0.4- to 1.0-pm-diameter and 10- to 1000-pm-long tubules were prepared by the gradual lowering of the temperature (to about 38 °Q of 21 (m = 8, n = 9) SUVs [358]. The walk of the tubules had thickness of 10-40 nm and were coated by spiral ripples and helical bilayer strips. Many tubules contained trapped SUVs. Polymerization of the acetylenic moieties greatly enhanced the mechanical and thermal stabilities of the tubules [355-360]. [Pg.63]
