Mechanical elements

Application of ceramics allows using stainless steel as vacuum envelope. No surface charges ean deflect the electron beam. Mechanical elements and functions can be easily integrated into the envelope due to its stability. [Pg.534]

The bead and spring model is clearly based on mechanical elements just as the Maxwell and Voigt models were. There is a difference, however. The latter merely describe a mechanical system which behaves the same as a polymer sample, while the former relates these elements to actual polymer chains. As a mechanical system, the differential equations represented by Eq. (3.89) have been thoroughly investigated. The results are somewhat complicated, so we shall not go into the method of solution, except for the following observations ... [Pg.186]

In this chapter, principal relations of solid mechanics, elements of convex analysis and calculus of variations, and methods of approximation are considered. [Pg.1]

Several other factors affect the frictional forces. If one or both of the contacting surfaces have a relatively low compression modulus it is possible to make intimate contact between the surfaces which will lead to high friction forces in the case of plastics having good adhesion. It can add to the friction forces in another way. The displacement of material in front of the moving object adds a mechanical element to the friction forces. [Pg.95]

HVAC blast dampers are devices with mechanical elements which close within milliseconds of the blast wave arrival. Blast dampers are available which will remain closed or which will reopen after pressures return to normal. Blast dampers arc furnished in frames that require attachment to properly designed structural elements. [Pg.201]

In this introduction, the viscoelastic properties of polymers are represented as the summation of mechanical analog responses to applied stress. This discussion is thus only intended to be very introductory. Any in-depth discussion of polymer viscoelasticity involves the use of tensors, and this high-level mathematics topic is beyond the scope of what will be presented in this book. Earlier in the chapter the concept of elastic and viscous properties of polymers was briefly introduced. A purely viscous response can be represented by a mechanical dash pot, as shown in Fig. 3.10(a). This purely viscous response is normally the response of interest in routine extruder calculations. For those familiar with the suspension of an automobile, this would represent the shock absorber in the front suspension. If a stress is applied to this element it will continue to elongate as long as the stress is applied. When the stress is removed there will be no recovery in the strain that has occurred. The next mechanical element is the spring (Fig. 3.10[b]), and it represents a purely elastic response of the polymer. If a stress is applied to this element, the element will elongate until the strain and the force are in equilibrium with the stress, and then the element will remain at that strain until the stress is removed. The strain is inversely proportional to the spring modulus. The initial strain and the total strain recovery upon removal of the stress are considered to be instantaneous. [Pg.73]

A device for mixing components in a solution or dispersion without moving mechanical elements. Stationary flow-guiding elements are built into a device, frequently a section of pipe, and they induce mixing and dispersion by repeatedly dividing and recombining partial streams of the flowing material. Also termed motionless mixers . [Pg.394]

Using XRF and EPMA in conjunction with SEM and EDX the antiwear films were found to consist of P, S, O, and Zn (Brown et al., 1992 Rounds, 1993). The application of XPS and AES surface techniques promoted deeper understanding of the antiwear mechanism elemental composition of the chemical species, valence of the elements, and depth distribution. Chemical speciation, e.g., phosphate and S (sulfide or sulfate) can be obtained from binding energies. [Pg.122]

The Single Maxwell Element LVE Constitutive Equation Consider the single Maxwell mechanical element shown in the following figure. The element was at rest for t < 0. A shear strain y12(t) is applied at t = 0. By stating that the stress is the same in the dashpot and spring, while the total strain is the sum of those... [Pg.140]

In the case that any of the mechanical elements of this section presented a failure, the formation of a concentrated acid puddle would occur with the simultaneous release of sulphur oxides. Subsequent to this release, and in the absence of mitigation systems, an acid cloud could form (Greenberg, 1991), extremely dangerous due to its high toxicity (LC50 = 320 mg/m3/2hr) (McAdams, 2006). [Pg.398]

Another approach that has physical merit is to model the behavior of viscoelastic materials as a series of springs (elastic elements) and dashpots (viscous elements) either in series or parallel (see Figure 8.1). If the spring and dashpot are in series, which is described as a Maxwell mechanical element, the stress in the element is constant and independent of the time and the strain increases with time. [Pg.200]

Static mixer, also called a motionless mixer, provides a homogeneous mix by flowing one or more plastic streams through geometric patterns formed by mechanical elements in a tubular tube or barrel. These elements cause the plastic compound to subdivide and recombine in order to increase the homogeneity and temperature uniformity of the... [Pg.233]

An example for sequentially BM polypropylene is an automotive air duct in which a central flexible zone (Figure 6.12) joins rigid end sections. The flexible zone allows for installation mismatches, accommodates thermal expansion, and damps vibration noise. The rigid portions allow for direct connection to other mechanical elements in the assembly. [Pg.301]

Relevant to this chapter is that the rheological behaviour (property) of any viscoelastic food can be well approximated by an arrangement (structure) of two mechanical elements springs and dashpots. In these models the Hookean elastic contribution is represented by a spring (with modulus E) and the viscous component by a dashpot (operating with a liquid of viscosity /i). [Pg.246]

As little movement occurs on cooling (see later) the fluid mechanics elements of the program were unnecessary, but the advantages of using a commercial program are that mesh specification, input and output are straightforward. [Pg.536]

This entry has presented a brief description of sedimenting and filtering centrifuges. The types of separation, separation duties, and modes of operation have been discussed. The basic common and distinct mechanical elements have also been dealt with. References are included for those readers seeking a more in-depth historical, theoretical, as well as practical background on the subject. [Pg.416]
